In 1904, the original building for the Herb Cottage was completed and used as the Baptistry for the not yet completed Cathedral. The All Hallows Guild began using it around 1916, but only as a place to store plants and seedlings which they sold to raise funds for the gardens. World War I curtailed some activity, but in 1934, the Guild was asked to become custodian of the building. It was named the
Herb Cottage because the Guild sold herbs from the herb garden adjacent to the building. While it sustained no initial damage from the August 23, 2011 earthquake, the Herb Cottage was moved from its historic building when a crane fell on it September 7, 2011 and wrecked part of the roof, side, and the beautiful landscape in front. Thankfully, the Shop was able to move to a retail space located on level B-2 of the parking garage. Independent and not-for-profit, the Herb Cottage provides gifts and souvenirs for both tourists and DC resident alike. All proceeds go to the beautification of the gardens and grounds of the Washington National Cathedral. We value your continued support and look forward to seeing you in the Shop!
