Tokyo Film Market to remain virtual for third year

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Tiffcom runs parallel to Tokyo International Film Festival.

Tiffcom, the content market that runs alongside Tokyo International Film Festival, will take place as an online-only event for the third consecutive year from October 25-27.

Organisers confirmed the move today (June 23), which reflects Japan’s cautious reopening of its borders in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, Tokyo International Film Festival has committed to return as a fully physical event from October 24 to November 2.

Tiffcom first went virtual in 2020 due to the pandemic but its decision to remain online for a third year comes as other film markets and festivals return to in-person events.

After two years of hybrid and online-only editions, the Neuchatel Intl. Fantastic Film Festival will fête its 21st year with a return to a fully on-site event, hosting four world premieres, and more than twice as many international premieres.

Running July 1-9, the Swiss event will world premiere the absurdist “Jaws”-in-France riff “The Year of the Shark,” the Thai creature feature “Leio,” and the Japanese Yakuza thriller “Bad City.” Titles like the Toho-produced Kaiju flick “Shin Ultraman,” “Something in the Dirt” from U.S. horror maestros Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and Léa Mysius’ “The Five Devils” will mark their international berths at Nifff – the latter as the festival’s opening film.

This blackjack edition will also mark the first year under the direction of Pierre-Yves Walder, a Nifff veteran whose involvement with the lakefront festival dates back some time. After a stint in the press office, years as a programmer,

The conference will form the centrepiece of the festival’s industry programme.

‘Lamya’s Poem’ Trailer Details Rumi-Inspired Syrian Refugee Tale (Exclusive)

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Long-awaited animated feature “Lamya’s Poem” has unveiled its first trailer.

Alex Kronemer’s Rumi-inspired film about a Syrian refugee girl named Lamya was one of the hot competition titles at the 2021 Annecy Film Festival, and went on to play at festivals in Vancouver, Zurich and Prague.

The film is an inspiring and timely tale about a 12-year-old Syrian refugee who flees the violence of her country, and looks to a gifted book of poetry by the famous 13th-century poet, Rumi, as a source of strength. As the perils of her journey mount, the book becomes a magical gateway where she meets Rumi when he was a boy and also a refugee fleeing the violence of his time. In a shared dreamworld, they battle the monsters that follow them from their real world situations, and Lamya must help young Rumi find his calling and write the poem that, 800 years later,

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Heading into his first edition at the helm of the Neuchatel Intl. Fantastic Film Festival (Nifff), artistic director Pierre-Yves Walder looked to land his white whale, setting his sights on a retrospective idea he’d dreamed up many years before.

“In concrete terms, I’ve wanted to do this ever since I first applied to the festival,” Walder says of Scream Q***r, a pet project that reflects on Lgbtiq+ representation through the lens of the fantastic. “I wanted to explore social elements through genre, which has always been a mirror for society, a place to express certain unmentionable ideas in abstract, using metaphor to explore subjects off limits in more direct approaches.”

Showcasing 15 films curated by Walder and his team and another four selected by The xx singer Oliver Sim, this year’s centerpiece retrospective brings together camp items like “Nightmare on Elm Street II,” cult classics like the Wachowski
