‘Twas a sad day at the Treasure Box.
Something belonging to our shop went missing over the past two days.

For those that may not know, we like to give stuff away as well as sell cool stuff at bargain prices.
One way we offer item for free is a shelf that sits on the sidewalk outside the store.
It seems that sometime between late Sunday and early Tuesday, someone decided that the shelf we use to hold free items was also a free item and took it away.

On the chance that this was a misunderstanding, and it was thought to be a free item, mistakenly taken by a friend of the Treasure Box, we would very much appreciate having it back, with no hard feelings. Maybe even a good laugh.

On the other hand, if this was a deliberate act of theft from a small local business, we would also very much appreciate the return of our shelf so we can continue to offer free items to our customers and others that pass by while visiting other local small businesses.

Help a store out, and if you know something about our shelf, please let us know.

And come by the shop Tuesday-Saturday, 10am to 6pm, and offer a cheery word to ease our sadness.

We say all of the time: you never know what's going to end up on our shelves. Take this beautiful Meiji-era Japanese porcelain vase... There is a story to tell, so this one goes into our continuing series, "Did you know? Now you do."

This is an ANTIQUE Hasami Ware porcelain vase from Kinpo Kiln, produced in the Meiji Era of Japan (late 19th to early 20th century).

The Meiji era (明治時代, Meiji jidai[a]) lasted from October 1868 to July 1912 and marked Japan’s shift from an isolated feudal society to a modern industrial power influenced by Western science, technology, politics, law, and the arts.

As Japan opened to the world, its arts and crafts gained new audiences and influences, while many artisans lost traditional patrons. The government promoted exports through world’s fairs, beginning in Vienna in 1873, and the Imperial Household supported decorative arts, including porcelain, through commissions and official appointments.

During the Meiji period, new techniques helped Japanese porcelain become internationally successful. Artist Makuzu Kōzan refined Satsuma ware decoration, experimented with multiple underglaze colors, and later incorporated Western influences that helped shape overseas views of Japanese design.

Hasami Ware, or Hasami Yaki, is traditional porcelain from Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture, with roots in the late Sengoku period. Known for white porcelain and indigo-blue gosu decoration, it includes kurawanka bowls, compra bottles used for sake and soy sauce exports, and warenikka tableware, developed in 1987 as break-resistant school-lunch ware.

Hasami Ware began in 1598, when Yoshiaki Omura brought Korean potters to the Omura domain. Production soon shifted from slipware to porcelain after local materials were found, and by the late Edo period Hasami had become Japan’s largest porcelain-producing area, helped by affordable kurawanka bowls.

Everytime this classic Four Seasons song pops up on our store's 50 hour playlist (yeah, 50 hours), I do not think of Frankie Valli or Bob Gaudio, as normal people do. Rather, I think of Frankie & the Urchins and the way they covered the song when they performed it in Fauquier Community Theatre's production of "Jersey Boys". Sadly, their version was not recorded, but maybe you can catch the Urchins when they play a gig in the area?

Like the swallows of San Juan Capistrano or the geese in "Fly Away Home", this book has come home to roost...

Some of y'all know this story. The Treasure Box began its life as BJ's Books, a landmark used bookstore haunted by us and our children and many other local Warrentonians for years, before she had to close.

This BJ's book was recently donated to the store, along with some other magnificent items. While those items are now waiting for you, we might keep this book as a reminder of our history.

If it's "BEER THIRTY" where you are, we can set you up with $1 beer glasses (avoiding the cheap joke about how beer glasses improve how you see someone). Seriously. You can get beer glasses, wine glasses, shot glasses, iced tea glasses, even milk glasses for one little dollar.

Come on over.
