Automatons were devices that could,
given a source of power
such as a wound spring or compressed air,
carry out a complicated series of activities. Almost 200 years later, at the height of the Industrial Age,
Lady Hyacinth Nasturtium, entrepreneur and inventor,
perfected the technique of creating
Automaton Unicorns. The Automaton Unicorns performed Victorian parlor games,
and were shown at grand
concert halls and the World’s fair of 1900. The Automaton Unicorn pranced around on its golden hooves,
bowed its majestic head, and revealed its magical horn. Wells, author of the Time Machine, said that it was a defining
incident in his life when he first encountered the automaton. Audiences so admired the ingenious system
of springs, escapements, levers and gears
that they soon began calling it a Steampunk Unicorn! Most prized was the Steampunk Unicorn’s horn;
it became a symbol of wealth and prosperity. The Legend of
the Steampunk Unicorn’s Horn
persists to this day! It is said that if you wear the horn
you will be enchanted
with the power to generate
utopian visions of the future!
