Ukulele star Jake Shimabukuro is grateful for his career. He’s collaborated with the best, producing creative music rooted in the Hawaiian tradition.

so when i was younger, like, 20 years agoish, i knew hula was getting popular in japan. like crazy popular, way more popular than it was in the 60s when my cousin was a little kid dancing hula and good at it, and somebody wanted her to dance in japan and my aunty didn't want to let her go. and i thought, eh, japanese are good at many things, but passion is not really a japanese trait, so dancing hula didn't seem to be something they'd be good at. there was a film festival on the mainland, in california... my friend Ron Yamada wanted to go see this film called HULA GIRL. and i was like, eh, i guess we can go see that, not too jazzed about it. but when the music started playing, i thought, that sounds like Jake Shimabukuro. this was 2006ish. roll credits and it WAS jake (i felt proud of myself for recognizing his playing, haha.... not that it's hard)! it was his first soundtrack score. and, this film proved me wrong and changed my mind... japanese can be VERY passionate about hula and dance very well. granted the finale is a tahitian number, but that's consistent with "hula" here in hawaii.... when i was a little kid dancing hula, we learned tahitian numbers too (complete with coconut bra... so embarrassing for a 10 year old to wear, lol). this film went on to receive 4 japan oscars and made a huge star of aoi yu, the lead. the score is still one of my all time favorites and when i play it, i feel like working.

how cool, i didn't realize i had this footage of a show we were going to do with Kamasami Kong when we screened Go For Broke Movie in april 2019 in japan. but then we never did screen it in japan, because we had the red carpet hollywood premiere at the American Legion Post 43 - Hollywood, CA in april 2019. :P

it was a dream to have ban daisuke (that's Generation Kikaida for the ppl who don't know jiro's name) on GFB, portraying a man (matsujiro otani, founder of the honolulu fish auction) who knew my great grandfather (kamekichi hayashi) in real life. because they were both from okikamuro. :)

this was an interview done for kamasami kong's show, however, sadly it never aired because didn't come back in april 2019 to show GO FOR BROKE: AN ORIGIN STO...
