Little history lesson...

Jim was drafted by the Kansas City Athletics in 1965. Team owner Charlie Finley wanted to come up with a catchy nickname for Jim so he asked Jim what he liked to do for fun. Jim told Charlie he liked to hunt and fish. Charlie came up with a story that when Jim was six years old, he ran away from home to go fishing, and by the time his worried parents found him, he had caught two catfish and was just pulling in a third.

And that's how Jim got the nickname "Catfish".
