A little stream etiquette goes a long way.

As more folks get out on the water, it’s worth remembering one of the biggest unwritten rules in fly fishing: don’t high-hole or low-hole another angler.

If someone is already working upstream, don’t step in above them and cut off the water they’re moving toward. Better yet, don't pull your vehicle up to the next access and work downstream, which we see a lot!

Most of the time, avoiding it is simple. Look around when you get to the access. Notice which direction people are fishing. There is so much water here in the Driftless that often times it is best to just head to another spot. Or a simple, “Which way are you headed?” at an access point can save everyone a lot of frustration. There are also signs you can get for your vehicle that say "fishing upsteam" or "fishing downstream", which can be super helpful as well.

We’re lucky to have the water we do here in the Driftless. A little respect for the angler who got there before you helps keep the experience good for everyone.

Fish well. Be kind. Give people room.

What are your tips to avoid the situation altogether?

After a brutal week of heat and flooding things have calmed down and gotten back on track. Remember to fish early in the day and check water temps as things tend to shut down mid day (or water temps at 65 or above). If you pick your time, summer in the driftless can be a ton of fun!

Happy 4th of July!

As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, we hope you enjoy a day filled with family, friends, and time outdoors.

With the warm summer temperatures, we’re also encouraging everyone to give the trout a break. When water temps rise, trout experience added stress, so it’s a great excuse to stay cool, hit the lake, fire up the grill, and enjoy the holiday instead. The fish will thank you, and they’ll be there waiting when conditions improve.

Have a safe and happy Independence Day from all of us at Driftless Angler!

Just a heads up. We're experiencing some mudslides, sinkholes and flooding after the rains (with more coming down all weekend). We recommend not heading our way for a couple more days.

Well, at least the streams cooled down a bit last night... Over 4 inches in Viroqua over the past 48 hours. Muddy mess everywhere but South. And things are still hot. Give it another day or two. The rains were a blessing for trout, but air temps are still miserable today.

Due to the extreme temperatures this week, the shop will be opening at 10 am every day until the temperatures drop back down.
If you must fish, please only fish during the very early morning hours and check water temperatures often (anything over 65 will be slow fishing).
Thank you for helping us protect the trout!
