We have an exciting meeting coming up for the Macoupin County Civil War Round Table.

A special meeting of the Macoupin County Civil War Round Table will occur on Sunday, February 15th, at the Community Center in Girard, Illinois. Corporate executive and entrepreneur Sameer Somal will address the group. Sameer has spoken to the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the New York State Bar Association, and IBM.
Sameer’s areas of expertise include Artificial Intelligence, International Law, Information Technology, and Abraham Lincoln. His talk is titled, “Laughing Through the Darkness: Lincoln’s Humor in the Civil War.” The speaker will show how Lincoln used humor to lighten heavy situations, steady himself and deliver difficult truths.
The meeting will start with a meet and greet at 1:30 pm at the Girard Community Center on the south side of the city square. The public is invited. The talk will begin at 2 p.m. and refreshments will be served. For more information contact John or Jeannie Alexander at 217-965-5443.

Censorship is so 1984.

Today kicks off , an annual observation started more than 40 years ago in response to a sudden surge in the number of book challenges in libraries, schools, and bookstores. Sound familiar?

George Orwell’s cautionary tale '1984' warns us about the dangers of censorship. This year’s Banned Books Week theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights.
