Last day of extreme heat warming! ( This round).
This heat has really wiped me out!
With my health, it makes it impossible to be out in it!
The only thing I've been able to catch up on is sleep!! I have lots to do outside when the temperatures drop!

Took the dogs out into the shade to run out some energy and play fetch for a few minutes.
Being inside with 110 plus heat index has them bouncing off walls!

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation on a 10-year, $40 million agreement focused on protecting wildlife and ecosystems during transportation projects across Southern Illinois.

The agreement, which took effect July 1, will establish a new Roadside Ecology Center at SIU. Researchers will conduct environmental assessments, collect and analyze field data, map project areas and complete other work before road and bridge construction begins. The partnership is the largest research agreement in SIU’s history.

Brent Pease, an associate professor in SIU’s forestry program, will lead the center. Researchers will look for threatened and endangered wildlife and plants, including timber rattlesnakes, ornate box turtles, northern long-eared bats, short-eared owls and buffalo clover.

“The Illinois Department of Transportation is taking a university-led approach to conducting these ecology surveys and SIU is being entrusted with the lower portion of the state,” Pease said. He said the work will also allow SIU researchers to develop practices that could be useful well beyond Southern Illinois.

The center is expected to employ 16 full-time workers, including doctoral-level researchers, while also providing opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students. SIU also plans to offer road ecology classes that could help prepare students for natural resource positions with IDOT and other agencies.

Pease said the center fills a need that has not previously existed in the region. “This type of center does not exist in Southern Illinois, and this research will benefit the Midwest overall.” SIU and IDOT recently entered a separate 10-year, $5 million agreement with SIU’s Center for Archaeological Investigations for archaeological survey work tied to potential road and bridge projects.

The heat persists above 100°, quite miserable!

I spent some time mowing the flower field and then gathered a few buckets of Zinna's.
I put together 9 bouquets.
Then we went around town surprising people!
🙂

We really enjoyed it and will be doing it again soon!
