I want to share a story, for those wondering what We Have Your Six has been up to lately.
For the past few days, I have been working with a homeless combat veteran in Virginia, who suffers with severe PTSD combined with a TBI/head trauma, both occurred while stationed in Afghanistan. He is at 70% VA disability, which most of you veterans know is not enough to live on. Why he isn't 100% is beyond me. He has Hud-VASH but can not locate a home for him and his family that will pass HUD inspection.
He and his wife and children have had little to no support from their family since he returned home. His mother will not allow him to stay at her home, due to erratic behavior that is out of his control. His VA therapist is working to help him deal with his PTSD and other mental health issues, but he struggles with wrapping his head around why he can no longer control his emotions. He has shared some of his combat experience with me, and it is clear that he is fighting some heavy emotional combat baggage. I can't imagine what he is going through, let alone fighting his own personal battles while chronically homelessness, on top of everything else.
The Cares COVID money took care of a lot of homeless people over the past few years, but that money is rapidly declining. We are beginning to see quite a few homeless veterans re-emerging.
Going forward, We Have Your Six will focus our efforts on the Veterans Transitional Barracks.
The property that was donated has some very expensive issues that are not worth investing our time and money into repairing. We are looking for property outside of the city limits that has sewer and water running to it. I will be focusing my efforts on grants and donations over the next several months to purchase property and beging to build our barracks.
If you would like to help with the planning and fundraising, please let me know. I could use all the help I can get to make this barracks a reality!
