During the 1903-04 Cripple Creek strike, the Colorado Militia was brought into the District. The J. B. Cunningham Lumber office was located in the back portion of the current Elks Lodge at 212 Diamond Avenue. In addition to many Colorado Militia in this photo, notice the tracks in the center of Diamond Avenue.

Seen here are the back of the Armory on the left and the Colorado Trading and Transfer on the right. The building in the center of the photo was the Oxford hotel and bar.

“To stem the violence, Colorado’s governor placed the Gold Camp under martial law and by September 1903, over 1,000 National Guard troops occupied the camp. During the six month occupation, hundreds of union members and sympathizers were rounded up and imprisoned in “bull pens” while others were ordered out of the District.” -Victor Heritage Society website.

An unusual shot of an old, unused drift on the seventh level of the fabulous El Paso Gold Mine. Notice the stalagmite-stalactite formations and the coral-like outcroppings covering the drift walls and ceiling in the foreground. The initials were probably affixed by miners in the hey-day of operation, during the period 1895-1905. From postcard PC2010-24
