Here is what happens when a cleaning jag gets left in the bore and a 7PRC gets launched behind it.

Nice buldge right behind the muzzle. With a split completely through the barrel wall. Good thing the suppressor held the barrel together and kept it from doing a banana peel.

No damage to the action so I cut a couple inches off the barrel and rethreaded it. Suppressor manufacturer repaired the damage to the suppressor and the rifle is back in action.

Tip of the day: to prevent a visit to the gunsmith make sure when breaking in your new rifle your cleaning jag doesn't unscrew and stay in the bore!

It's time to leave the 350 Legend to the kids and step up to the classic 35 Whelen.

The 35 Whelen is a cartridge that has been proven since 1922. It is a 30-06 necked up to 35 caliber and is listed as legal for Iowa gun seasons.

Unlike the 350 Legend the Whelen is good for all north American game, not just Iowa whitetails. A good rifle with a good shooter can make effective 400 yd shots.

Most any long action bolt gun with a 30-06 bolt face can be rebarreled for the Whelen.

I have used Shaw and X-Caliber barrels with excellent results.

Barrels take 4-6 months to get. So if you want one for the 2026 season, let me know and we will get the project going.

If you just want to buy one, I am working with Gabe's Gun Shop and we will have a couple of Savage Axis rifles on the rack for sale in the next couple of months.
