The Golden Brigade An epic story told by author/historian Robert J. Dvorchak about the 82nd Airborne in Vietnam.

09/20/2023

Robert J. Dvorchak has been awarded the 2023 silver medal for his writing in the history category of the annual competition held by Military Writers Society of America, the organization announced.
His book, The Golden Brigade: The Untold Story of the 82nd Airborne in Vietnam and Beyond, was one of a record number of book entries in this year’s competition and was scored through a rigorous evaluation process.
“We know you put in a great deal of work to get your book written, edited and published, “said Betsy Beard, director of the MWSA awards process. “You should be proud of your accomplishment. We certainly are. MWSA is happy to add this award to your growing list of literary recognitions.”
A journalist and writer for more than 50 years, Dvorchak said this prestigious award resulted from a culmination of his writing experience.
“I am extremely honored to receive this award from a national group that recognizes, appreciates and rewards good writing. It feels like a lifetime achievement award,” Dvorchak said. “This book fosters healing among soldiers and civilians alike at the same time it preserves the individual stories of those who served their country in Vietnam. The story had to be worthy of my best efforts because it’s about the 82nd Airborne and by the 82nd Airborne. Nothing but excellence is acceptable.”
MWSA is a nationwide organization of authors, poets and artists drawn together by the common bond of military service. Its core principle is a love of the men and women who defend this nation through their sacrifice and dedication. Its roots go back to 1998 when Vietnam veteran Bill McDonald started a website with the poetry and prose he composed while serving in Vietnam.
MWSA announced the award at its annual conference, held this year in New London, Connecticut.

Colonel Alexander R. (Bud) Bolling Jr., commander of the Third Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, greets paratroopers exiting a C-141 Starlifter upon their arrival at Chu Lai, South Vietnam, on Feb. 15, 1968. Two days later, commander-in-chief Lyndon Baines Johnson visited Fort Bragg to address troops headed to Vietnam on his orders. Division commander, two-star general Richard Seitz, greeted the president and also offered remarks to those being deployed in an emergency to blunt the Tet Offensive. In his remarks, LBJ told the assembled troops that "the hearts of nation and the hopes of men in many nations fly with you and and will follow you until this duty is done." Six weeks later, LBJ announced he would not seek re-election and would work to end the war. The brigade was in Vietnam for 22 months. It took 160 flights of Starlifters plus six C-133 Cargomasters over 10 days to move 3,670 men plus their equipment to Vietnam. All The Way.

Seldon "Pete" Watkins (Oct. 12, 1947 -- Dec. 27, 2022) served with distinction in Vietnam with Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Third Brigade, 82nd Airborne. Pete was in the platoon led by Sgt. Felix Conde (Medal of Honor) and was wounded in the same battle during which Conde was killed on April 4, 1969. During his tour in Vietnam, Pete became lifelong friends with Les Hayes, who recently passed away. Pete and Les reconnected after the war and played an integral part in filling in parts of Conde's story to his family. Pete and Les were honored guests when Conde's son, Richard, received the award when the Medal of Honor was posthumously presented in 2014. Rest In Peace.

Hot chow in the field, delivered in insulated mermite cans, was a luxury for troopers in the Third Brigade, 82nd Airborne, in Vietnam. Most often, a meal came in World War II-era C Rations. Slices of canned fruit with sweet juices were sent from home and opened with the P-38 can opener. Salad forks were in short supply. Makes one appreciate mom's home cooking. Happy Thanksgiving.

In a reorganization of forces, Oscar Company of the 75th Ranger Regiment joined the Third Brigade, 82nd Airborne, in February of 1969, to replace the Long Range Recon Patrol. The Rangers' motto was Sua Sponte (Of Their Own Accord) because it was an all volunteer unit.. Descendants of Merrill's Marauders of World War II fame, Oscar Company operated in Nhi Binh, the Ho Bo Woods, the Pineapple and Iron Triangle. The mission was to see without being scene, to "out-guerilla the guerilla." Five members of Oscar Company were killed in action in 1969: Staff Sgt. Jerry D. Beck and Sp4 Daren Koenig on April 6 (Easter Sunday); Sp4 Michael Kelley on April 8, Staff Sgt. John LaPolla on April 15; and PFC Charles WRight on September 19. Rangers Lead The Way.

The rough terrain fork lift was a workhorse in the supply chain, like this one named Mission Impossible from the 82nd Support Battalion. The infantry battalions may have thought they never got enough of what they needed, but behind the scenes, support personnel worked to keep the troops supplied with bullets, beans and benzene.
