Be cautious on buy a boat from Jim!
Purchased an 26’-0” OFFshore boat from Jim at RB Boats in May 2021 put $20,000.00 deposit down. Periodically I gave money installments to a total of $53,000.00 plus $2700 in parts because I understand how it is to be run a small business. 3yrs and 8 months later my boat is still not finished, but Jim has built 10-15 boats during that time frame, and also a drift boat to raffle off for charity, While the finish dates was pushed 7 to 10 times. June 2024 it got pushed outside to make room for another customers boat that put a deposit 2 months after mine. It sat outside until October 2024 and was still low priority to the other customers boat build. I was told by Jim that he is out of money. Hmmm $53,000.00? So about 3 months ago I finally had a conversation that if the boat isn’t done by the end of 2024, I would retain an Attorney that I have already spoken to about this situation. He promised me it would be done. I also bought all the electronics for the boat and ended up losing my installation spot because my install date was moved multiple times and labor increased to $50 more an hour. There has been a little bit of progress but the boat isn’t complete enough to take in and hang motors on it. I went and spoke to Jim on 12/30/24 and nothing had been done, just like so many other times I have came by. I ask Jim what his plan was since it didn’t look like it was going to be complete by the end of 2024. He said like many times, I’m doing what I can! So I said I need a date the boat would be complete or I will move forward with my Attorney. Jim tried to blame that I made changes on the boat, and other things. The boat was 95% figured out 1 1/2 years ago. So New Year’s Eve I got a text about my home address. I asked what’s up. Jim tells me he is not going to build the boat for me and he is refunding my money! Jim tells me if I come on his property or shop I’m trespassing! What a way to do business! I think I was more than patient with Jim! But this isn’t the first time he has had this problem. It just sad that this has happened, Jim’s lack of commitment on a contract to build me a boat has come to this. But Jim has had plenty of time and money to buy toys and go on multiple weeks of vacation while I wait for my boat and some other customers. January 2025 I will be in contact with my Attorney for damages and up cost of buying another boat at 2025 prices! My opinion and experience I look at other custom boat build that are more reliable!
