LINCOLN GREEN gets its name from Lincoln, a medieval English city famous for producing a rich green wool cloth dyed by layering yellow over blue. The shade became strongly associated with hunters, foresters, and especially Robin Hood and his Merry Men, who were traditionally depicted wearing it in Sherwood Forest. Over time, “Lincoln green” evolved from the name of a specific textile into the name of the muted woodland-green color itself.

SANTOLINA is prized for its luminous, pale blue-sage hue, which appears softened by a silvery bloom that gives the plant a dry, velvety, almost sun-bleached character. Its coloring evokes Mediterranean hillsides, weathered stone, olive leaves, and faded sea glass, especially when contrasted with its small golden button flowers. Symbolically, Santolina has long been associated with purification, quiet resilience, and domestic protection, owing to its aromatic leaves and historic use in herbal gardens and linen cupboards.

Like Santolina stirred by a dry Mediterranean breeze, this warm sage-blue organza possesses a weightless, fluttering translucency, its crisp surface shifting and trembling with the same airy delicacy as the plant’s silvery sage foliage.

VELATURA refers to the fine translucent glazing technique used in classical painting, in which thin layers of pigment are built up to create softness, radiance, and atmospheric depth. Rendered in shades of gold, velatura produces a diffused luminosity that resembles candlelight passing through amber varnish or late-afternoon sun suspended in dust. The effect is less metallic than gilding and more optical, a mellow, honeyed glow that seems to emanate from beneath the painted surface itself.

This dark gold silk organza echoes the concept of velatura through its transparent layering and muted luster, allowing light to move through the fabric in a way that recalls the glazed amber tones suspended within a Renaissance painting.

🏰 RENAISSANCE FLAIR! 🏰

“Happy second day of 2026!

Today, I’ll reshare my “Properzia de’ Rossi, Renaissance Sculptor” ensemble. (And I will REALLY try to have something new next year!)

I made this 1530s renaissance-inspired ensemble to celebrate Properzia de’ Rossi, a sculptor who belongs to the small but significant group of women known to us today who succeeded as artists in Renaissance Italy.

Both the title of this ensemble and the color palette was inspired by Louis Ducis’s post humus painting of de’ Rossi. (Scroll through to see the painting.) Argued to be one of the first women in Western European art to work professionally as a sculptor, her achievement was gained during a time when sculpture as an art form was believed to be exclusively the prerogative of men.

This gown used the Thimbles and Acorn “Once Upon a Time” pattern with the “Renaissance Faire Hampton” bodice front. At the time it was made, the T&A pattern had just been released and the timing of that year’s AG Ren Faire perfectly coincided. I finally had the opportunity to use an exquisite piece blue silk jacquard damask I’d had for years in my stash just waiting for the perfect project. The gorgeous ‘Dandelion’ silk taffeta is from .

The balzo style headdress is my own design. This style of headdress was worn by noblewomen of Italy in the 1530s. It was donut-shaped but appeared turban-like from the front, though it was generally worn further back from the forehead exposing the hair, unlike a period turban. It is assumed as a fashion invention by Isabella d’Este, first documented in letters in 1509 and 1512 and well copied in later years.

With the exception of the earrings, I’ve made all the jewelry pictured with this set. The earrings are part of my own collection and I love them too much to part with them, but they were made by talented Ruth White .”
