“Just imagine traveling 9,589 miles to do the things you dreamed of doing as a little girl.”

When I was a little girl, I used to read National Geographic and Encyclopedia Britannica, along with a giant map of the world. It was my way of traveling through the pages of books.

One of my favorite regions to visit while on my imaginary flight was Africa. I would bring a giant bag of yarn, ride a Safari truck crocheting through the Serengeti to animal watch, join a dance ceremony hosted by the Maasai tribe, and depending on the time, I would visit Zanzibar to explore the "Spice Island".

As time went on, I would think of all of the memories and adventures I had while crocheting and exploring, and now I have a picture to prove it.

Today I am a nonprofit founder and executive director, who launched the BIWYD International Girls Empowerment Tour in East Africa where we taught girls to crochet as a social-emotional learning tool to better connect their thoughts to actions, aka dreams.

You know the mom who raised that smart mouth daughter who lived in her house, ate up all her food and thought she had all the answers.

Sound familiar?

As the daughter of a rockstar mom, I grew up in a unique environment where I learned life lessons from daily interactions. My mom didn’t play when it came to education, chores and extracurricular activities. The entire house had a weekly schedule, from church to chores to school to sports. I felt like I had all the answers, and I was always ready to take on the world.

As I grew older and pursued my own career as a scientist, I realized just how much my mom had done for me. Despite her success as a government employee, she went back to get her Master’s in Social Work, which wasn’t a surprise because she always put everyone’s needs first and never complained. I appreciated her more than ever, even as we lived far apart.

That's why I created the SIP N' STITCH, to celebrate and connect with other rockstar moms like mine. The event is a time to appreciate the sacrifices and hard work that goes into raising a smart mouth daughter doing her best to live up to the legacy of her mom. It's a time to come together and support each other, to share stories and create memories.

So this Mother's Day, I encourage all rockstar moms and their daughters to take a moment to celebrate themselves. You are amazing, and you deserve recognition for all that you do.

Supporting a good cause shouldn’t have to feel like dart practice, but you should be able to hit the bullseye every time.

Feeling good about your charitable donation is important.
