Now that we have had ( I hope ) the last of the big snows in Central NY, It's time to plan out your garden, start your early plants ( a greenhouse is great ), decide on your layout and whether you are going the traditional garden ( tiller and in ground ) or whether you are going raised beds.
I am going to raise my hand here and vote for the raised bed style.
It drains quicker, it is easier to plant and easier to harvest. I have been building raised beds for some time now and will never go back to the traditional way.
One of my favorite tricks for my raised bed gardens is to use a drip irrigation system. No, not the hose with the tiny holes in it, but the system with the adjustable nozzles. By turning on my hose, which by the way is hooked up to a bib spreader ( you can hook more than one hose at a time ) and adjusting the nozzles on my drip irrigation system, I get full coverage of the plants, no dry spots, no extra wet spots. I set the nozzles to wet the soil not the plants. One other trick is to put a timer on your hose bib so that the water goes to the garden at a set time. It will save you water and time. Now I am off to start some plants.......
