After Loveland, I headed for the mountains. Breckenridge was the last stop on my Colorado skatepark pool quest. The temperature dropped almost 20 degrees, but it’s the altitude that really gets you—9,600 feet above sea level.

I’ve been here three times now, and every time my lungs are on fire during the first few runs. You definitely feel it.

This skatepark pool is an absolute must if you’re into pool skating. It has two death boxes (one in the shallow end and one in the deep end), shallow-end stairs, and even a pool light. An all-time favorite for sure.

The locals are awesome, too. Actually, everywhere I skated in Colorado I only met cool people. Colorado rules! 🤘

Loveland was the next stop on my quest to skate Colorado’s skatepark pools. This one was super smooth and featured a very unique deep end. For reference, the newer San Juan Capistrano bowl has a similar deep-end shape, but Loveland is way more fun and legit.

The pool has shallow-end stairs and a death box in the deep end. The face wall is super steep, and the shallow end is perfect—10 out of 10.

I’d love to go back and skate this one again under better weather conditions. I never expected Colorado to get so hot. It was 98 degrees, and everything was overheating. After several days on the road, camping and skating every day, the heat finally caught up with me. I managed a two-hour session before calling it a day.

Fort Collins Skatepark Pool has one of the coolest features I’ve ever seen in a skatepark pool: they built the Black Flag bars right into the death box.

The story I heard from an older local is that Bill Stevenson, drummer for Black Flag and the Descendents, lives in town, so this was their homage to him.

Punk rock and pool skating will always go hand in hand for me!

Fort Collins Skatepark Pool features a death box in one shallow-end pocket, a set of stairs in the other, and square corners in the deep end. Such a fun and unique pool.

Fort Collins, Colorado.

After Broomfield, I headed north to skate Fort Collins. Before that, though, I grabbed a hotel room in Denver to recharge my batteries. By this point, I had been driving, skating, and camping for over a week straight.

I also stopped at Arvada Skatepark. No skatepark pool there, but the place is huge and definitely worth a visit if you’re passing through.

Broomfield Skatepark Pool, Colorado.

My GoPro battery died, so I only got a few clips. It was a hot, humid day, and my battery was drained too.

But this pool is SICK!

Broomfield, Colorado Skatepark Pool.

A classic kidney-shaped pool. This one has all the essentials: shallow-end stairs, a death box, and a love seat. Super fun and flows incredibly well.

If this was the only thing you had to skate growing up, you’d have no problem adjusting to a real backyard pool later on. It doesn’t get much closer to the real thing.

Bennett, Colorado Skatepark Pool. This one was sick! A capsule-shaped pool with shallow-end stairs and a death box on the side wall. It’s a bummer they got rid of this pool. Whoever decided to do that—or contributed to its demise—should be ashamed.

After Roxborough, I drove 60 miles east to Bennett, Colorado, and camped at another campground. That night turned into the scariest camping experience of my life.

The lightning and thunderstorm were absolutely gnarly, with relentless rain and howling winds. I woke up at 3 a.m. to find nearly 2 inches of water inside my tent. Needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep.

But by 8 a.m. the next morning, I was at this SUPER SICK capsule, handling business as usual.

Nothing like being young… I was 42 years old!
