10 Things I Realized After Giving Up Alcohol (Almost 7 years ago)
People often ask if I miss drinking. The truth is, not at all. After multiple attempts to moderate, cut back, or quit it finally stuck. And I, like many people, just wish I had given up the bottle sooner.
Here are 10 things sobriety has taught me:
1. Sobriety didn’t take anything from me—it gave me everything I didn’t know I was missing.
2. Life is still hard. There have been heartbreaks, disappointments, and seasons I wanted to escape. But I’m grateful I’ve been present for all of it. The good moments mean more, and the hard moments have made me stronger.
3. I don’t enjoy a lot of the things I used to. Some places and situations just don’t interest me anymore, and that’s okay. I’ve grown.
4. Small talk doesn’t fulfill me anymore. I value deep conversations, authenticity, and people who are willing to be real.
5. My standards changed. For friendships. For relationships. For how I spend my time. And most importantly, for how I treat myself.
6. Peace is underrated. I don’t need chaos or constant excitement. A quiet, peaceful life has become one of my greatest goals.
7. Feeling good is better than feeling buzzed. Clear mornings, better sleep, better health, and a clear mind are things I never take for granted.
8. Sobriety gave me confidence I never found in alcohol. Real confidence comes from showing up as yourself, not hiding behind a drink.
9. I’ve learned to sit with my emotions instead of running from them. It isn’t always easy, but it’s where the healing happens.
10. I’ll never stop being grateful for the decision I made almost seven years ago. Sobriety didn’t change who I am. It allowed me to become who I was always meant to be.
If you’re thinking about quitting alcohol, don’t focus on what you think you’ll lose.
You might be surprised by everything you gain. ❤️
