Bacopa monnieri, also known as Brahmi or Waterhyssop, is a plant used in Ayurveda for its memory-enhancing properties and control of blood sugar levels. It contains active compounds such as alkaloids, saponins, and cucurbitacins, which have various biological activities. The plant has been studied for its potential in treating Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and depression. Animal studies have shown promising results in reducing symptoms and protecting against neurodegeneration. Concerning safety, Bacopa monnieri has been found to be generally non-toxic, with no serious side effects reported. However, interactions with certain medications and contraindications in conditions like hyperthyroidism should be considered. Further research is needed to determine optimal dosages and ensure safety, especially for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Bacopa monnieri contains powerful compounds that may have antioxidant effects.
For example, bacosides, the main active compounds in Bacopa monnieri, have been shown to neutralize free radicals and prevent fat molecules from reacting with free radicals (4Trusted Source).
When fat molecules react with free radicals, they undergo a process called lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxidation is linked to several conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other neurodegenerative disorders (5Trusted Source, 6Trusted Source).
Bacopa monnieri may help prevent damage caused by this process.
For example, an older study showed that treating rats with dementia with Bacopa monnieri reduced free radical damage and reversed signs of memory impairment (7Trusted Source).
More studies in humans are needed to better understand the effects of Bacopa monnieri on on neurodegenerative disease, if any. A systematic review of 5 randomized controlled trials found no benefit of this herb in the treatment of Alzheimer’s, though the authors did note that the studies were of small sample sizes (8Trusted Source, 9Trusted Source).

What’s more, in animal studies, Bacopa monnieri had anti-inflammatory effects comparable to those of diclofenac and indomethacin — two nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs commonly used to treat inflammation (12Trusted Source, 13Trusted Source).
Bacopa is thought to improve cognitive function—how you think, learn, and remember things.12 The way that bacopa improves your brain function is not fully understood.
Bacopa appears to positively affect the hormone dopamine, protecting it from being removed from the brain.3 Dopamine plays an important role in many brain functions, including motivation, reward, memory, and mood.4
