Survival Rule of 3’s and Top 5 Survival Priorities.

Many have heard of the rule of 3’s when it comes to survival. 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. However, these are not actual rules but more rough guidelines to prioritize needs in a survival situation. This is why I take out the 3’s when it comes to using them. Basically, a normal person can survive,
- Minutes without air or with major bleeding.
- Hours without shelter from extreme heat or cold.
- Days without water.
-Weeks without food.

Which leads me to the 5 Priorities in survival
1. First aid- It is important to know basic first aid and CPR. If major bleeding or lack of breathing happens typically you only have minutes before the person dies. This urgency places this at the top of the list of priorities.

2. Shelter and Fire- The body can lose or gain a considerable amount of heat without shelter in extreme heat or cold conditions. Building shelter and fire are very important skills to master and your kit should contain multiple ways to start a fire. In a survival situation redundancy is key.

3. Signaling- Signaling for help or self-rescue should always be utilized if possible. After all the best way to survive is to get out of the situation.

4. Water- Our bodies are comprised mostly of water, and we require fresh water to survive. Finding and treating water is imperative to surviving. You should avoid water that shows signs of toxicity such as dead animals at all costs.

5. Food- Food is necessary to replace calories used and provide energy necessary to survive. Our bodies burn calories even by just breathing. While food may not be immediately important in a short term survival situation, it is highly important if relying on self-rescue that may take longer than 1-2 days.
