Birch syrup is coming along nicely! I just love that copper color it gets before it turns to syrup.

Plus our first batch of baby chicks hatched! 😍 5 new friends for the farm, with plenty more on the way. Got a real broody bunch of hens this year! It was literally snowing as they hatched! 😆 But spring is definitely here anyway, as the fights over the prime nesting boxes ramp up and we start drowning in eggs. 🥚🥚🥚🥚

I'll be coming to town soon, so if anyone wants to get in on the egg action, let me know!

Well we are finally out of hibernation! The winter has finally let go and gave way to spring. Yesterday was the first snow free day the homestead has seen, even though there are still patches tucked away in the woods. This winter was hard on us up here in the snowbelt, and it feels amazing to feel the sunshine, stretch out, and hear the birds and frogs singing.

Maple season is officially over for us and we are in full birch mode, sloshing through muddy trails and hauling massive amounts of sap! Can't wait to taste that incredible birch syrup over some salmon or brussel sprouts. 😋

This time of year always moves so fast, we already have broody hens and the garden is begging to be cleaned up. Pretty soon we'll have baby chicks cheeping around and flowers blooming. 🌸

Updates from Muddy Trails Farm! We are completely buried in roughly 3 feet of snow, but the sun is out occasionally so we've been able to snowshoe some of our trails ahead of syrup season. Not an easy task even for our big farm dog. 😂 We unexpectedly got 8 new hens to bring our flock up to a whopping 81!!! And they lay green eggs!!! 💚 Every day there's a little more daylight and spring is right around the corner. Soon enough we will be sloshing through the mud and spilling sap!

Garden season has come to an end. Frosty morning and cold temps, it seems that winter is just around the corner! Cleaning out the garden is always so bittersweet.

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes! Had a beautiful weekend with amazing weather! I got to hang out with my friends who came to the homestead for a BBQ, watched the chickens freak out over BBQ scraps (they are pigs!), went for MANY hikes in the woods to enjoy the fall colors, cuddled all my pets, and spent time goofing off with my husband instead of working on projects! I'm so grateful for the experiences and people in my life, and my birthday always reminds me of that. I appreciate everyone who reached out to wish me a happy day!
