What exactly IS a Hitchcock chair?
Created in 1818 by Lambert Hitchcock, a Connecticut furniture maker, this iconic “fancy chair” caught on quickly for its affordability, durability and stylish stenciling.
Lambert pioneered assembly-line methods to produce affordable furniture for middle-class America- transforming the Hitchcock chair from high-end to accessible. Original 19th century chairs were often smaller than modern seating because they were created for a smaller stature population.
Key characteristics: stenciled gold or bronze designs ( fruits, flowers, lyres) on the back rail, turned legs, and a woven rush or cane seat. Authentic antique chairs often carry a stencil mark on the back, such as “L. Hitchcock, Hitchcocksville. Conn. Warranted.”
