Ok bookworms, get ready for a long post about our situation.

I have always striven to be as open and honest as possible while serving this community. When you shop at The frugal bookworm you walk right into a piece of my heart. This store represents my hopes, dreams, and aspirations. I'm going to share our situation with you because you deserve to be apart of this journey. You, our customers, are the ones who made all this possible after all!

We went into this year looking for a new and, possibly, bigger space. We had saved up money and were looking to move to a location that would better serve the role we wanted to play in the growing literacy community in tulsa. A place that would engender growth and a jumping off points for local authors, artists, and community based programming.

Unfortunately, we never know what the future holds.

The covid-19 pandemic has changed so much for all of us. We closed our doors to keep you safe and then waited to see what every new day would bring.

Because we are such a small business we were not eligible for the small business loan programs offered by the government. Without employees on payroll we didnt have the option of the forgiveness through PPP. Most of our helpers at the store are volunteers. And friends and family we have roped into giving a helping hand. We used our small nest egg to pay our rent and keep the lights on. Weve spent the last 45 days trying to figure out what our best option would be. We decided that it would be irresponsible to take out a loan from a more traditional source if we cannot guarantee that we could pay it back. We dont want to risk having to close our store entirely. This store and our community means too much to us to make risky bandaid solutions. And so we have had to make some tough calls.

We are moving online for now. The lease in our current location is ending on may 31st. And while our landlord has been as supportive as possible we cannot afford to renew at the rate of our current rent.
Lee ann and I have poured our hearts, souls, and wallets into keeping this store alive. We bought the store three years ago from the previous owner with our own money. And like any business owner we have invested countless hours into making it function. However, if we have any hope of reopening a physical store front one day we have to re strategize the way we do business.

To put it plainly, this really sucks. We love and cherish all of you so much and we want to continue to offer you affordable books and to donate books to children and adults in need.

This isnt goodbye. We are working so hard to set up an online store that will allow all of you to utilize your remaining book credit. We are also trying to set up a phone service so that our older customers or customers without internet access can call us. We plan to offer free local delivery for phone orders or for any of our customers who cannot afford to order online. We hope to be able to save enough money to open a new storefront as soon as possible. There are so many things we want to do and people we want to help. This is just a set back in that path.

We are still working out all the details. We are essentially starting from scratch. Moving online is scary. Without a storefront its hard to predict sales and our ability to rebuild or a timeline. But we believe we have a role left to play here. And we arent going to give up. We will continue to involve all of you in our journey as it unfolds.

I'm still working on a few things before we have to really start packing. We would like to offer individual shopping hours by appointment to you all. Because we want to keep you safe. I know that the state and government are relaxing their policies but you all mean too much to us to risk your health in a selfish way. But we also want to give you the opportunity to use your credit and stock up before we begin the hectic process of moving and getting an online shop set up. We are also going to offer all gift cards, whether it be in store in the next 2 weeks or online/phone shopping with us in the future. If you supported us on Ko-fi in exchange for a gift card we will also be honoring that. Once we are set up and ready to launch online then we will start reaching out as well as posting on our social media about how to use them. I will have more details in the next few days. Please be patient with us. This is all new, and we are just trying to make the best choices we can as a business and as a family.

If you would like to support us and cant make it in to shop by appointment (once we set dates and times for that), I'll will have our Ko-fi in the comments below.

Thank you all so much for your continued love and suppprt. You have no idea how much it means to us. I have loved getting to know all of you. Talking books, family, pets, hobbies has been something I will treasure. I look forward to the day when we can open in a new location and I can welcome you all in with open arms

For now please be safe out there. We hope to see you soon.

Hey bookworms, A final update for now.

Due to Mayor Bynum's executive order this weekend we are no longer able to operate, even in the limited capacity that we were before. We appreciate so much all your support and encouragement during this time.

We still have tons of kids books to give away but we are going to have to find another way to do this since we are not allowed to function right now. It may be that I will set up personal delivery for parents and kids in need but we are waiting on a response about whether that is allowed.

As saddening as it is for us to have to close our doors for the time being our biggest concern is that our customers and community are safe. We encourage all of you to stay indoors and to observe all safety guidelines provided by the CDC. If following those guidelines keeps even one person safe then all this will be worth it.

If you would like to donate to help us get through this we would greatly appreciate it. You can make donations to our Ko-fi (digital tip jar). We are going to do our best to bounce back from this so that we can continue to offer you all affordable literacy options. We are offering book credit/gift cards to anyone who donates and is interested. If you would like to receive book credit to your account or a gift card for your donation then please reach out to us via our page!

We hope to see you all when this is over! If we have any other updates we will announce them here.

Stay safe and take care of each other!

Hey bookworms, we've got an update for you.

While we have to remain closed to the public during the Covid-19 outbreak we are still going to offer curbside pick up and limited home deliveries. In order to keep our customers and ourselves safe everything will be contactless. Unfortunately that means we cannot accept cash at this time. All payment can be made by debit/credit over the phone.

We still have tons of kids books available if you know kids in need! The same policies apply for free book pick up or drop-off! We really want to help in anyway that we can!

Our new hours are Monday-Friday 12 pm - 5 pm

You can call us at (918)742-8329 or message us here on Facebook!

As I'm sure many of you have heard all non-essential businesses in the 19 Oklahoma counties that have confirmed cases of Covid-19 must close starting tonight at 11:59 PM.

Unfortunately we are considered non-essential. I'm not going to lie and tell you that I'm not scared that we wont make it through this. However, I am still determined to help in whatever ways we can.

I'm taking the day off tomorrow to plan, to clean, and to prepare for the next couple of weeks.

Starting Friday we will be offering scheduled curbside pick up & limited contacless home delivery, we will post more about that when we have the fine details worked out.

We also really want to continue to give out free books, we have just under 200 kids books and several hundred adult books that I am absolutely willing to do either pick up or home delivery for. If you know anyone, but kids/parents especially, who need books please encourage them to contact us by phone or through our page We are also still taking donations of toiletries and socks for the homeless.

I'll post our Ko-fi (digital tip jar) in the comments if anyone wants to help support us by donating.

If you have a need that you think we can fill please do not hesitate to contact us.

Please, Please, PLEASE stay healthy and take care of yourselves and each other!

Here is our second update:

Okay! If you haven't seen our previous post about our shop updates please take the time to read them when you have time!

The world is really crazy right now, and we are trying to figure out how we can help!

Starting THURSDAY we will have a library section in our store! We are setting up a place that our community can come get free books. We know times are hard and lots of people have lost jobs. We are still selling our normal inventory but there will be a separate section for anyone who wants books but cant afford them.

Currently we have 200 kids books (ages 2-12) at our store for FREE. With schools and libraries closed we know kids need books now more than ever. Around 50 of these were donated by "The Mad Hatter little free library" here in Tulsa, she has said that her library will stay open as well! You can find her here on facebook or I can give you directions to her LFL

If you cannot afford to buy books please PLEASE come in or call to get some books for your kids! Feel free to come in and look or call ahead and I'll pull some age appropriate stuff for you. If you would like to do a contactless pick up I will happily arrange that for you!! Right now there is a limit for 2 books per child/adult

Once your kids have read the books you are welcome to arrange to trade them for new ones from our in store library! same goes for our adult readers!

If you have Kids books that you don't need please consider donating them to our library.

We are still accepting donations of mini toiletries and socks to take to the homeless shelters in Tulsa. Our most vulnerable people are so at risk and we want to continue to support them in any way we can.

A small message from Ash:

I know these are small things compared to all the needs our community has at this time but its the only way we can think of to help. We are trying to focus on the positive, to where we can help, and how we can make a difference instead of being afraid. With that being said we are aware that during this time of pandemic the store is struggling. We want to keep our doors open and our rent paid so that we can continue to offer support and work our dream jobs. But we don't want to be selfish and do anything that could risk you all by asking you to shop. It's a hard balance to walk as both a community member and a business owner. I did create a Kofi (digital tip jar) if anyone wants to donate. We appreciate any and all support at this time, even if its just sharing this post to parents so they are aware of the free books we will have!

I sincerely hope that you are all staying safe and that you and your families are healthy. If you see a need in the community that you think we can fill please let us know! We want to help where we can!
