In the Shop EP: 1 “New Beginnings”

Hello everyone! In this first episode of In the Shop, we look at an order placed by a customer in Maryland and discuss the importance of building strong and preferably local networks when you’re looking to start your own business. We also introduce the subject of next episode, the Parker Ultra Giant replica.

Here at Thompson Pens, we aren’t veterans behind the camera but we’re still dedicated to bringing you our insights, experiences, and advice to help our fans, customers, and potential business owners alike have a deeper look into our process and hopefully learn from our successes and our mistakes.

Thanks for watching and as always, have a blessed day🙏🏻

While we put the finishing touches on episode 1 of In the Shop, we wanted to share with you some preliminary sketches done by the magnificent .f.g.iannetti for our latest limited edition Thompson Simplicity.

This pen will be the newest addition to the Thompson Simplicity: Collaboration Series and the second overall entry into the series. This particular design will be hand painted on unit 1/12 and features 3 distinct animals native to the Midwest: the Mourning Dove, the Eastern Collared Lizard, and the White Bass. This work represents another entry into Stephen’s latest foray into nature inspired art.

We are beyond excited to share the finished product with you. Thanks for looking and as always, have a blessed week!

Hello everyone!

Tomorrow afternoon, we’ll be premiering the introductory video for our 2026 In the Shop series, followed by the first full entry in the series. In this first video, we’ll be sharing our work on an order from a customer from 🦀Maryland, U.S.A.🦀 featuring this beautiful RHR Parker Giant replica(circa1920s).

This order will also continue into a second entry once another pen from the same customer returns from being re-tipped. That video will let us show the next part of the process: what happens when a repair job ends up needing a repair, how we approach the final adjustments, and what it takes to get an order fully across the finish line.

In the Shop is our way of bringing you further into the process behind Thompson Pens. We’ll be showing the work that happens at the lathe, the decisions that have to be made, the setbacks that come up along the way, and the level of care required when every detail matters.

We also hope this series will be useful for anyone who owns a small business, wants to start one, or is trying to guide a business into a new phase. As a father-and-son team working in a business that has been around for over three decades, we’ve learned many lessons the hard way, and we want to share those experiences honestly as we continue working to streamline our operations, strengthen the business, and preserve the quality that got us here.

We couldn’t have made it this far without the support, encouragement, and patience of so many people over the years, and we’re excited to share more of what really goes on In the Shop. We hope you’ll enjoy following along, and that something in this series may be helpful to you too✍🏼

We’re happy to announce along with our video series, “In the Shop” we will also be starting a longer running, recurring series titled “In the Community with Thompson Pens”, where we’ll highlight local makers, work with other artists, and look for ways to support local causes however we can. Our local community is packed with rich history, good causes, and local talent that we believe deserves a real spotlight.

This time, we’re pointing people towards .melton out of Pryor Creek. His knives immediately stood out to us because they have the same thing we look for in any handmade piece: function, character, and a clear human hand behind the work.

You can see it in the way each piece feels like it has its own purpose. Some are rugged and practical, some are more refined, but none of them feel generic.

Melton Forged is run by a retired police chief, full-time pastor, and knife maker who puts real care into what he makes. These are not Thompson Pens products, but we’re proud to point people toward good Oklahoma craftsmanship when we see it. Anyone interested in his work should reach out to Melton Forged directly.

Thanks for looking and as always, have a blessed weekend and happy Memorial Day!!🙏🏼🇺🇸

Introducing: In the Shop with Thompson Pens

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be making a video series that aims to give you a closer look at the craft, care, and decisions behind Thompson Pens. This series comes at a real turning point for us. We’re working through our backlog, clearing space in the shop, tightening up our process, and making things more streamlined without losing the handmade standards that brought us here in the first place.

For our customers, we want this to be a more transparent look at what goes into the work before a pen ever reaches your hand. For other makers, artists, and aspiring entrepreneurs, we also want this to be an honest look at what it’s like when an old small business decides it’s time to refine, reset, and build for the next chapter.

Not polished theory or business guru advice. Just the real shop, the real decisions, the delays, the fixes, the small wins, and the work behind the work.

Welcome to In the Shop with Thompson Pens.

Sometimes, adding a little heat to the mix is all you need to get a fire going😎🔥

Watch as Chris Thompson uses a heat gun to apply just the right amount of heat to slip the feed and nib into this red hard rubber section without damaging any of the three components.

Stay tuned as we announce a new video series that we plan to release with the first video releasing very soon. In addition we are cooking up some collabs that we know you’ll love. Thanks for looking and as always, have a blessed weekend!🙏🏼
