Stenocereus Thurberi subsp. Littoralis (commonly known as Mini Organ Pipe or skinny form) is a dwarf relative of the standard organ pipe cactus. It is native to the southern tip of Baja California Sur. It forms dense clusters with narrow stems. The plant grows much smaller than the standard Sonoran Desert organ pipe, topping out from 6-9 ft at maturity. It produces bright purple flowers, followed by sweet, grape-sized purple fruit. Can tolerate full sun in Tucson with adjusted watering. Or can also thrive in mid-day and afternoon shade. Requires frost protection. We have a very nice selection of this material in 1 gallon containers, shown in one of the photos. Thanks for your time and have a fantastic Friday!!

Today we feature Cleistocactus Colademononis,or the (white-haired monkey tail cactus) a very desirable, trailing epilithic cactus. It produces extravagant, bright red or coral-orange flowers, that attract hummingbirds. This plant thrives in indirect bright light, or morning light with shade cover from mid day and afternoon sun. It can handle winter temperatures down to 20 degrees if kept dry during the winter months. Not frost tolerant, so protect or bring inside if there’s a predicted hard frost or freeze warning. We are currently offering this plant in 8” hanging baskets. Thank you for your time and have a marvelous Thursday!

FareTheeWell “MR. RIPPLE” Agave. This MASSIVE inflorescence measures currently at 25ft tall from the rock top dressing in the pot. Be sure to come on down and lay your eyes on this before the bloom is finished. MR. RIPPLE is a suspected natural hybrid between A. Americana ssp. Protoamericana and A. Salmiana. The plant was first discovered in 2001 on a nursery expedition in San Luis Potosí , Mexico, by Wade Roitsch of (Yucca Do Nursery) at the time. A pup was collected and imported back to the U.S. where they then propagated the plant via tissue culture. Ever since it has been very popular for collectors abroad. This agave is a rapid grower, and can reach 5ft tall and a spread of 8ft wide. So, be sure to give plenty of space when planting this clone in landscape. It can tolerate full sun exposure here in Tucson and has reported cold tolerance of 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, it shouldn’t need winter protection for the vast majority of anyone planting in tucson and the surrounding areas. We have a few of these plants available for purchase if this is something that peaks your interest. Thanks for your time and have a wonderful Wednesday!

Today we feature Buiningia Brevicylindrica var. Longispina, or under the new classification (Coleocephalocereus Aureus var. Longispinus). This semi-tropical cactus is native to the rocky, arid environments of Brazil, more specifically the state of Minas Gerais. This plant offers green/yellow, nocturnal flowers in summer, that form out of a wooly section down the plant known as a cephalium. The plant has to reach maturity before the cephalium will form and produce flowers. It prefers morning sun with mid-day and afternoon shade, or filtered light (at least 30-40% filtered) all day. Winter care is a little tricky. You want to stop giving water once the nightly lows start to drop under 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Any moisture in the soil, if the plant gets close to freezing temperatures, will cause the plant to rot. Therefore, no water all winter. Protect from frost. Best bet is to bring it inside a greenhouse, move to a covered porch next to house, or bring inside to a south facing window. Being sure to keep it completely dry all winter, and not exposing the plant to sub-freezing temperatures. We offer this cactus in 6” pots, if this is something you find attractive or interesting. Have a wonderful day!
