Jim Karp's weekly bird list

After last week’s rain-out, today was a beautiful day. Temps in the mid 50s and rising quickly, under sunny skies. We had 33 birders, and 39 species of birds. We went south along the Anza Trail, then into Ron Morris Park for the hawk watch, then back on the trail north to the beginning. The woods going south to Bridge Rd. were quiet but 3 Common Black-hawks rose from the trees, along with the a few Turkey Vultures and a lone Zone-tailed Hawk. The Park produced more black-hawks, with 5 spinning fairly low overhead. Gray Hawks were heard only. The trip back north again produced most of the smaller birds, with a Hepatic Tanager and 3 different warblers high in the trees.

Jim Karps weekly bird list

It was a beautiful day yesterday. Temps started in the mid 40s and rose through the 60s during our 2 1/2 hour walk. It was sunny with little wind. We went south on Bridge Rd. to Tubac Bridge, crossed to the east side and went north on the dirt road off of MacCallum Road, then into the woods at hole number 8, then south through the woods, and north on the spur trail to the nature center. We found 32 species of birds, and we had 47 birders, probably a record for birders.

The highlights were a female Rose-throated Becard, and two Common Black-hawks that rose from the trees above us and gave everyone great looks.

My fingers are crossed that this email will send, if not close your ears because I will be cussing.

Jim Karp's weekly bird walk

The weather was more like Tubac this morning. Beginning temps in mid-30s and ending in the 50s with sunny skies. We went to Rancho Santa Cruz and walked north, the bridge is out to the south. The birding was slow with no Green Kingfisher (seen yesterday). We had 34 birders (at least), but saw only 22 species. The beautiful weather and the new stretch of river for most of us to walk made the lack of birds bearable.

Jim Karp's weekly bird list

Winter continues to grip Tubac. Starting temps were in the mid 30s, and when not protected by the trees, the wind was brisk. We walked from the nature center on the road to the Tubac trail head and went south to the second cattle gate, and then back past the Presidio. We had 13 birders and we identified 31 species of birds. No unexpected birds this morning.

REMEMBER: Peter Collins will speak tomorrow, February 20 in the big room in the nature center building at 10 AM on Raptor Identification. All are invited.

Jim Karps Weekly Bird Walk

It was a wintery day in Tubac, sunny but temps in the mid 20s and winds rising as we walked. We had 18 birders and we found 35 species. We went north on the Anza Trail from the nature center, across the golf course bridge, and south on the dirt road to the foot bridge back across the river, then north on the Golf Resort spur. Tree tops were again filled with Yellow-rumps. The only rarity were 2 White-throated Sparrows. Location is described below.

TOMORROW IS THE OPENING OF THE TUBAC NATURE CENTER TO THE PUBLIC FROM 10 TO 4, AND THEN EVERY WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY AT THAT TIME UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Jim Karp's weekly bird walk

It was mostly cloudy today, a little chilly with temps in the low 40s at the beginning. We had 21 birders and we found 33 species. We went south from the nature center along the trail and then north on the east side of Tubac Bridge. We bushwhacked back after unsuccessfully looking for the becards. The cottonwoods are beginning to blossom and were full of small birds at the outset of the walk. Most of the birds ID were Yellow-rumped Warblers, but the light was very bad and more birds went unidentified than identified. Some of the highlights were a Great Horned Owl, a Peregrine Falcon, and an Anna’s Hummingbird that flashed his amazing gorget at us for our viewing pleasure.

Tomorrow at 10 AM a nature walk starting at the nature center and led by Sherry Sass. Come one, come all!!

From James Karp's Bird Walk Report:
"It was a NEW day. It was the second event in the program of the Tubac Nature Center. Like last night at the Dark Skies event led by John O’Neill, it drew 25 people. We walked south from the nature center to the Tubac Bridge, then north on the east side of the Bridge to #8 hole, and back south on MacCallum Rd. The weather was chilly at first but warmed rapidly. The highlights were 2 Eastern Bluebirds, a variety of ducks on the #8 hole pond, and so many returning birders."
