Oh hello there! Gosh it’s been a hot minute! Guess what I’ve been doing for the last year?? I more or less quit my studio practice and started teaching at SUNY Cortland, a small NY state school near my home. It was a crazy opportunity, one that came utterly out of the blue and took up all my time and energy. So much fun and so much work!! I was happy to have the chance to shake up my life and try something new! Turns out college kids are a lot like toddlers, so I was pretty well prepared;) Who knows how long the gig will last, likely not long, but it’s been quite the ride and I think I’ll stick with it until they dump me for someone with a masters degree.

Buuut, this summer, I’ve had some time and space to PLAY! Mostly, if I’m being perfectly honest, I just gardened and cleaned out my basement, but when I was in my studio, I was making work for a faculty show that will be opening next week, details to follow. I was really daunted by this project because I’ve always been a production potter, so the idea of making art pieces was scary, but exciting. I played with a bunch of ideas, but ultimately, this is what I came up with and I couldn’t be happier with the way they turned out! What do you think?

The Finger Lakes Pottery Tour was established to highlight some of the region's finest ceramic artists as well as to foster an appreciation for clay and pottery as an art form.

Before and after! It Never ceases to amaze me how weird glaze is. It’s nothing like paint!!! It dries instantly, looks completely different pre and post firing and is wildly unpredictable. I’ve been noticing some changes in my glazes lately and it only just occurred to me that it might be due to the water I’m using at my new studio! Nothing else has changed in my glaze formulas except that now I’m using municipal water and before I was using well water! And I haven’t noticed until now because I had such a stockpile of glaze and I always add the old buckets to the new buckets when I mix a new batch, so the change has been very Gradual. I think I’m going to have to ask for a bucket of water from the new owners of my old studio so that I can do an experiment:) ahh glaze, you temperamental creature. Anyone else have a love/hate relationship with their glazes?

Also, this weekend!!! Link in bio for more details. This little mug will be there with its twin. It could be yours;)

Check out this big puppy! No, no, it’s not a real puppy! Sorry if that’s disappointing, maybe I’ll post a puppy picture later. But back to my big bowl!! I made this bowl by accident - I was trying to make a large custom piece (which still isn’t finished, thanks for your extreme patience custom orderers!). It was supposed to be a wide, tall crock but I underestimated how much clay I’d need. As I threw it, it quickly became clear that the piece, however wide, would never be tall. But hey! Don’t cry for me (you can cry for my client because they still don’t have their giant crock), it was a happy accident! I ended up making a flat bottomed bowl, which, for those of you who haven’t taken a pottery 101 class, is not often done! Usually a bowl has a rounded bottom and a cut in foot. Because I made this one in a different style, I decorated it differently and it started me off on a kick of making bowls in a really different style than I have in the past, a way that is interesting to me and I feel like has potential for new explorations! In truth, I made this bowl a while ago and have been holding onto it because I liked it so much, but I think it’s time to release it to the wild. I’ll be bringing it to the this weekend, June 10 & 11, so if you’d like it to be yours, you should come! Or you could just message me here:) Though the shipping on this puppy will be a bear. How’s that for a statement full of animals who don’t actually have anything to do with the information I’m trying to get across;)

ALSO, swipe to the last photo for a classic photo of Cayuga Lake in summer (no, scratch that, a classic photo would have clouds😉). No filter! The Finger Lakes region of NY is SO stinking pretty in summer!! Just another reason to visit the in case you needed a little nudge.
Anyone have any classic photos to share with me? Hah, or photos of puppies? 😄

The 6th finger lakes pottery tour is less than a week away and I’ll be there, hawking my newest pots. This event is coordinated by a dedicated team of 11 FLX potters and though I think we’re getting better and better at the job, it’s a labor of love. We work hard to put this event together and to make work that we’re proud to show you all. But it’s also a lot of fun:) Potters from near and far come and we all shoot the s**t and nerd out about pottery. Woot! Who wants to talk glaze calculation and pin-holing with me this year?! Pottery love isn’t for everyone, but if you’ve got the bug, come get dorky with your fellow lovers of clay next weekend, June 10 & 11. Details in bio.

Spring! I am a northerner who desperately wishes she was a southerner, so when spring bursts forth in New York, I nearly die of joy. Apple blossoms are particularly evocative for me. I was born in Williamson, NY, an area known for its fruit trees. Every spring, my mother would bring a stool outside to our old orchard and place it under a blossoming apple tree. My brothers and I would take turns having our photos taken in amongst the flowers. This photo is me when I was 4 or 5 years old. Oddly enough, you can’t see the apple blossoms in the photo, but I swear, they’re there!

I haven’t been posting any pottery pictures lately because I haven’t been making any pottery. Slowly, unintentionally, at times painfully, I’ve been putting aside my work more and more and finding myself at home with the babies more and more. I never planned to be a stay at home parent, but I’m feeling like one most days, and I’m having very mixed feelings about it.

Before having kids I worked really hard to build a pottery business. It was small, but it was hard work and it was work I was proud of, work I loved. I always knew I wanted to have kids and I thought I had the perfect job for it, pottery is flexible, I’d be able to work part time and take care of the baby part time. That kind of worked with our firstborn but it was 1000x more challenging than I thought it would be.

I slowed down the pottery work even more when baby number 2 arrived but I kept at it, enjoying the quiet studio moments and managing (barely) all the other demands on my time.

But now, with three little ones, I just can’t seem to make all the puzzle pieces fit. I know people work full time and have kids and I am in awe. I have a debate raging in my head all the time - one side says, “you can do this! Go to work! Send the kids to school! Get off your lazy butt and get cracking!” And the other side says, “why? Why am I working so hard to send my children away so that I can ‘work’ when in reality I can barely get anything done and I’m so tired?” Another voice comes in and says “you are a privileged human and these are 1st world problems. “ and I have to agree with that voice, but it doesn’t ever make it feel any better.

I love my kids. I love my work. I feel like I’m not giving either of them the care and dedication they require. Do you have to choose sides? How do other working artists/humans weigh their work against their family? How do you fit it all in? I’m so curious and confused and overwhelmed and I’d love to hear what other folks have to say about working and parenthood.

Also, at the very least, I’m teaching my babies to have an appreciation for fine, handmade pottery:) This little teacup that Abe is sipping from is a original.
