So we went to the museum yesterday.
& there’s no way that seeing a Monet in person can compare to anything AI can create.
Did you know that before going to Venice towards the end of his life Monet had hit a creative wall that made him feel like his work was inadequate? Despite being already a critically beloved painter he’d felt the work he’d been doing was unsatisfactory. His wife suggested they visit Venice & there he felt renewed & went on to create was considered to be the ‘grand finale’ of his life. His world famous water lily collection.
How could an AI create something without that sense of purpose? Without that feeling of inadequacy that leaves an artist striving for more?
There was multiple paintings of the same locations. As if Monet was trying to capture something he hadn’t found yet and wouldn’t stop till he did. An AI system doesn’t have that sense of determination.
Paul Cezanne said “A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art.”. No computer can ever give you that pure emotion that a human soul can.
Support the artist, the authors, the dreamers…. As the author George Bernard Shaw said “Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable.”

We know when we read books we’re connecting with authors & their thoughts. Words they’ve left behind even though they were gone from this world long before you were born.
But we’re a used bookstore so there’s another way we connect & that’s through people who have read the books before. We get donations from all kinds of people. People who cherished their books but need to make space. People who need to let go because they’re moving somewhere new. People who want to share what they love.
But there’s another category. And that’s the books we get from people who have passed away. For me these are the most poignant ones. Someone picked these books over the years & held onto them because in a moment of their life they meant something. Now they’re left for a new reader, sitting on our shelves waiting for a home.
This picture is my grief sitting on a shelf in a bookstore. These are some of my father’s books. He left them all to me when he passed nearly two years ago. They’ve sat in boxes for nearly a year waiting for me to come to a place where I could go through them. I finally did. I kept a lot but some needed to go find a place where they could be appreciated more so I brought them here. It was hard to process them & put them out knowing where they came from. Wanting to hold onto every string that led me back to my dad. But I also knew he was a huge part of the reason I love reading & it was ok to legacy live on with other people.
I wonder sometimes about the people who have read a book before me. And then I start to wonder where my books will end up someday when I move on from this world. It’s a beautiful thing to see words carry on beyond one life to become almost immortal. And maybe I’m romanticizing but I don’t I ever want to see it another way.
