Denim is notoriously one of the most intimidating fabrics to sew.

You have to invest in a new needle, adjust your tension, and update the thread quality—a bit overwhelming.

So before you go BIG, start with something easy like ‘EZ Denim’. This is a lightweight, 8 oz. Denim in the shop with 0 stretch and easy to sew. No need for a new fancy denim needle (in my opinion). It’s perfect for your first tote, singar, or even—if you dare—first jacket.

Sometimes I need to find the fabric to inspire the next project before I find the pattern.

Here’s a mix of new fabrics that dropped in the shop last week:

💕 Sour Raspberry: Smocked rayon knit
🫐 Blueberry Muffin: Rayon Spandex Jersey

I hope they inspire you to make cozy T-shirts, flowy dresses, or summer halter tops. And the best part—each fabric is a limited edition because it’s deadstock; once I sell out, it’s rare I’ll find these styles again.

Owning a small business is a growing experience on soooo many levels.

When I first launched this chapter of Sew by Sew (selling fabrics online since 2023), I was the one picking up fabric, sorting, cutting, folding, shipping, marketing, etc.

There are a lot of moving parts, and a lot of learning along the way. At times I’ve felt like I’d made the perfect dress, only to discover the wrong sides were together or that my bobbin had run empty on the final stitch.

I’m excited to share that I’ve been hiring out some extra help! Jay (my husband 💕) packs your orders. My buddy Tony✂️ helps me sort, cut, and fold all pound goods for my Mystery Fabric Bundles. And the last 2 weeks have been a new shift in my small business. I’ve hired help to cut and fold fabrics! This is one of the most physically demanding aspects of my business. Thanks to Sara 🧡 and Alex 💙, I’m creating a processing system to help fulfill your orders faster!

I have stated on the site that orders take 3-4 weeks to be processed. I know that seems long—but the processing window is getting shorter—yay! The fashion industry throws away millions of pounds of fabric each year.

So, I’m gathering my favorite styles to share with you. All of these fabrics are deadstock— leftover from fashion production. These fabrics are good to use, and by sewing with them, you’re helping extend the life of existing materials. We don’t need to create new fabric—there’s enough unused fabric waiting for a 2nd chance.

No effort is too small in your sewing room to bring sustainability into your sewing projects.

Here are a few easy ways to make your sewing projects a little more eco friendly.
🌎✨

♻️Use secondhand and deadstock fabrics to give materials a new life.
✂️Stretch every scrap by sewing accessories, quilting them together, or using them as stuffing for a p**f or pet pillow.
👯‍♀️Invite your friends to a fabric swap to share fabrics that no longer spark joy for you anymore but could spark joy for someone else. Reducing textile waste!

Just a few cutie fabrics in the shop right now. 🍧Melted Snowcone is a soft rayon/spandex baby French Terry that’s perfect for a toga outfit or even a lightweight blanket. 🍒 Sweet Splash is a super limited swim knit 💕Sherbert is a lightweight cotton voile— I’d love to see it in a flowy blouse, and my fave bold floral in the shop 🌼🌼 Crayon Garden has these epic large flowers that would stop traffic— they’re all so cute, and I’m excited to see what you’ll create. But here’s the thing— deadstock fabrics are super limited. Once I sell out, I rarely find these again. What print is your fave? Let me know in the comments. Hey Sewing Nerd! Thank you for following along this journey.
The first version of Sew by Sew started in an attic after I dropped out of art school. I lived with 7 complete strangers in the West Adam’s neighborhood of LA. I studied fashion design at OTIS,but the program didn’t feel like a great fit for me. I wanted to learn how to make everything— not learn how to draw the perfect figure.

When I decided to leave a teacher pulled me aside and asked me what my plan was. I said I wanted to start a clothing line made out of upcycled materials. She said “that’s great. People start businesses out of their garage all the time.” ( the pink card is my first ever business card. Yes, I had a myspace. OG)

After years working in fashion from designing, pattern making, 8 years of merchandising to now 13 years in deadstock. I’ve managed productions, my own clothing brand and take in special projects that all surround sewing and fabrics.

The fact that I get to share my passion with 100K fellow sewing nerds melts my heart. Thank you for supporting Sew by Sew on this new chapter. I’m excited to share with you more deadstock fabric finds and bringing more transparency to the fashion industry and sharing some DIY projects with you.

I’m just a girl who lived in the forest of Camas, WA, who found DIY and sewing through the punk scenes of LBC to now a woman sharing my favorite things sustainably and deadstock fabric finds with you. From the bottom of my heart. Thank you. I can’t wait to see what you’re sewing next!
