With the amount of recent precipitation Kansas has received, several of our rivers and streams flows have increased significantly, like the Smoky Hill River (photo taken today). While canoeing/kayaking/or floating down a river or stream is a great way to view wildlife or take in Kansasβ fantastic scenery, please be mindful that increased water flows and flooding conditions can create dangerous situations. Extreme caution should be practice and never try canoeing/kayaking/floating down/or swimming in a river or stream that is flooding or experiencing above normal water flows. Never try crossing a road that is flooded, you canβt see if the road has been washed out and it only takes one to two inches of water flowing over a road to wash/sweep a vehicle off the road (Turn around, donβt drown!).
Additionally, the Kansas River, Arkansas River, and Missouri River are only navigable rivers in Kansas (this was established in 1861 when Kansas became a State). All other rivers and streams in Kansas are considered private property and require landowner permission to utilize. This also includes bridges or water crossings on county roads.
