Oddfellow's is closed until further notice as we cope with the loss of our bookman, Brandon Rison.
Brandon Dean Rison passed away on the evening of February 20, 2026.
During his life, Brandon prioritized learning above all else. He spent his days immersed in audiobooks on American history, presidential biographies, and any piece of historical knowledge he could get his hands on. His lifelong love of books and history led him to his career as an antiquarian book dealer.
His bookstore, Oddfellow's Fine Books, became known for its fairness, integrity, and deep respect for rare and first-edition works. Brandon was a graduate of the Colorado Antiquarian Book School (CABS) and a member of the International Online Booksellers Association (IOBA). He was also a proud supporter of the Friends of the Shawnee County Public Library and NPR — institutions that reflect his belief in lifelong learning and accessible knowledge.
Brandon had an equally deep love for music. One of his greatest joys was attending concerts and supporting live music. His favorite place to be was Knucklehead’s in Kansas City, surrounded by good music and good people. He was especially proud of his late grandfather, Warren Bernhardt, who was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame for his work bringing national acts — including Dr. Hook and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band — to the Jolly Troll in Holton, Kansas, in the 1970s.
He was preceded in death by his father, Steven D. Rison; his paternal grandparents, Gerald and Darlene Rison; and his maternal grandfather, Warren Bernhardt. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Martie (Lawless) Rison; his son, Gavin P. Breedlove; his mother, Sandra K. Rison; and his grandmother, Nelda Rolfe. As well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Brandon did not want a large funeral or formal ceremony. In keeping with his wishes, we will hold a simple celebration of life in his hometown of Sabetha, Kansas. Anyone who knew and loved Brandon is welcome to join us on March 12 from 2–5 p.m. at The Parlor, an event space in Sabetha. We will share stories, raise a glass from Brandon’s extensive whiskey collection, and honor him the way he would have wanted. No need to dress up — wear your favorite band shirt and comfortable jeans. He would have liked that.
We understand Sabetha is a long drive for many. If you cannot join us on the 12th, we ask that you take a moment that evening to raise a glass to Brandon wherever you are.
If you feel compelled to honor him through a donation, please consider supporting Speak Up or Helping Hands Humane Society.
Lastly, if you or someone you know is struggling with depression, mental illness, or suicidal thoughts, please reach out for help. In the United States, you can call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. There is help available. There is hope. You are more loved than you know.
