As Halloween quickly approaches I want to share a poem I found that I think encapsulates Halloween and the feeling every parent knows so well. 😅
Halloween is my favorite holiday, and now being a parent myself I dread giving my kid so much candy but the memories last a lifetime, so I encourage you to just let them eat the candy 🖤
(I hope you enjoy this old photo of me as a Genie with my siblings)
“The wrappers are empty,
the pumpkins are carved,
But nobody’s sleeping and nobody’s starved.
The calendar says October is done,
But the great sugar high has only begun.
They don’t walk up the stairs,
they just hover & zoom,
Like miniature rockets from room unpon room.
With eyes open wide at a quarter to ten,
They scream, “can we eat all the skittles again?”
The parents are trembling,
the parents are weak,
As chocolate stains smear every sticky young cheek.
We wince at the crunching of jawbreaker treats,
And dream of the dentist bills filling our sheets.
We chase them with toothbrushes,
begging for peace.
Praying this neon-hued madness will cease.
It’s a fourteen day nightmare of cavity dread,
As sour straw visions bounce around in their head.
But the storm passes, the plastic bins pack,
And sanity slowly begins to creep back.
You look at the photos of monsters and ghouls,
Who spent one whole evening defying the rules.
The cavities heal and the baby teeth fall,
But the magic of autumn outlasts it all.
It’s more than just memories stashed on a shelf,
It’s the one night a child can be someone else.
For laughter, and wonder, and neighborhoods bright…
Halloween is the best, even after the fright!”
