Hello friends! It’s been a while and tons of things have changed in my life since I last posted. We lost my mother to ALS in February so that’s been a huge adjustment for my whole family, particularly to my walker dependent, 83 year old dad who is now living by himself for the first time ever. Things are ok though and I’ve the moved to more of a caretaker role for my family. I haven’t lost my love for plants and wanted to show off one plant in my landscape beds that is really standing out.
This is Fashionably Early Crystal Phlox and is at its peak right about the time peonies come into bloom, which is late April/early May here in my zone 7b on the AL/TN stateline. I had this planted at the flower farm and moved some of the plants home when I landscaped last spring. It makes a fabulous cut filler type flower with good vase life and tall stems. See the last pic for height comparison to a 5 gal bucket. It spreads in the landscape but not aggressively, and will rebloom some throughout the summer if cut back. It is fine in full sun but can also do well in part shade too. I purchased a flat of plugs from a few years ago, but have seen this in some local nurseries and greenhouses this spring around Huntsville if you just needed a small quantity. It would make a great low maintenance addition to a cut flower garden/farm.

Really enjoying these newly blooming “Ballerina” zinnias from . I direct sowed these on 6/24 and am now getting consistent numbers of large, mostly double pale pink and peach blooms. I love how they pair so well with perennials in the garden right now, like these antiquing paniculata hydrangeas and sedum that is beginning to blush up.

Although probably too late to plant this year in my area (zone 7b - AL/TN stateline), check out this link and remember when planning your seed orders for next summer.

I certainly am no great floral designer, but having beautiful flowers and a great vessel helps! This container was my treat from the Atlanta show this past week. It is handmade by a North Carolina artist and I am enamored with it. I owe my friends for finding it for me and bringing it home after I had to leave early due to a terrible migraine attack.

All the flowers came from my yard and garden - limelight hydrangeas, dark pink lisianthus, oklahoma salmon and queen lime zinnias, Miss Amara dahlias, white yarrow, Autumn Joy sedum, crepe Myrtle berries and camellia and jasmine foliage. I rolled up rubber coated chicken wire for support and just stuffed and shoved. 😀

Now let’s have a mahjong party! 🀄️

I must admit that there have been times this summer when I’ve felt some envy when seeing buckets of harvests from other flower farmers on Instagram. The rational part of my brain eventually does tell me that I have made the right decision by shifting gears to take care of my family. And I’m certainly blessed that I’m in a position where that has been an option. While I don’t think I’ll ever go back to full time farming again (which is incredibly hard to even type), I can take what I know and apply it on a scale that I can manage and enjoy for me. These early morning walks and cuts from my garden are a joy to my soul. 🌅🌸

I’ve been dry storing and saving these Etched Salmon peonies in the cooler for over a month now with the intention of taking them out to enjoy over the long holiday weekend. You’d never know they weren’t just freshly cut. Just another reason it’s my favorite variety.

Now that the chaos of MD week is behind us, I suppose it’s time to make the “official” announcement - Last Tuesday we harvested what will be the last peonies from the farm. Thursday of this week, we will cut what will probably be the last of the flowers we will grow for sale. This has been in the works for about a year now but I am just now really ready to share.
Back in 2020 when I made the transition from row cropping to cut flowers, the idea of ever selling the business was the farthest thing from my mind. I fully expected to croak out in the peony field as an old lady doing what I loved. But God had other plans for me. And through His intervention, He has made a way for me to be able to take care of my family (particularly my aging parents who aren’t in good health). My time, attention, and energy to people I love most is needed elsewhere at this point in my life. And it’s just not possible to continue to operate the flower farm and take care of those people. Last summer, he brought Elizabeth Cummings from Burnsville MS to me in an Instagram message. She was looking to start a cut flower farm similar to what I’ve been running and asked if I would consider mentoring her and helping her get started. I told her yes and we proceeded to work out a deal where she would purchase the bulk of my peony roots, coolers and likely greenhouses. She and I are blessings to each other and I’m so happy I’m able to help someone else get started in business and pass along some things I’ve learned along the way.
Last fall, we dug and divided 1500 peony roots for her and she now has those planted on her farm. This fall we will send her another 3000 or so and she will be well on her way to a nice scaled peony field for commercial sales.
Please follow her new venture . There you can read about her “why” in wanting to get started and some of her plans which are pretty darn cool.
Thank you to all my precious customers, supporters, and well wishers these past 5 years. Y’all have helped to make a dream of mine come true and I feel at peace letting go knowing what I’ve accomplished. 💐

EDIT:
WOW!!! Y’all are on it! I’m closing responses on the sheet for now. If we are able to cut dry flowers tomorrow or Tuesday, I’ll open it back up for more bouquets. It’s been a hard harvest season and we can’t put wet flowers in the cooler.

We’ve got a little different system for reserving and purchasing Mother’s Day bouquets this year (mostly due to my inability to get my Shopify store set back up without a lot of hasslehoff). Due to poor weather and harvesting conditions this spring, we are limited on how many orders we can take.

*If you would like to reserve a bouquet for pickup at the farm on Friday May 9, please fill out the Google form (link posted below and in our profile)

Details as follows -
**Pick up on Friday May 9 between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm
**Bouquets will be wrapped in a sleeve, tied with a ribbon and will feature pink and white peonies and will include some accent flowers that could include : phlox, snapdragons, baptisia, or US grown wax flower
**Payment will be at pickup. Checks, Venmo, and cards accepted. Price is $26.38 per bouquet (includes sales tax)
** Farm address is:
12444 Pulaski Pike Toney AL 35773

Easter morning cuts from the peony field.

With warm temperatures today, I’ll come right after church and again this evening to make more cuts so that I can catch these at the right stage to store. Tomorrow we will have all hands on deck making deliveries, spraying fungicide, cutting snaps, baptisia, and peonies, and getting ready to begin peak harvesting mid week or so.

Wish you and your families a beautiful Easter Sunday celebrating the resurrection of our Savior! ✝️

We cut the first bunches of a brand new to the market type of ranunculus today and they are lovely! This is Moderna Miele and is a beautiful gold color. The flowers are packed tight full of petals like a regular ranunculus but they grow with side buds like a butterfly. Thank you for bringing these to the American market!
