On this date June 6th 1979…

Dan Marino was drafted by the Kansas City.
Royals in the 4th round of the 1979 MLB Draft while he was still a high school athlete in Pittsburgh. He chose not to sign and instead attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he became a star quarterback before being selected by the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft.

An interesting footnote: the Royals also drafted John Elway in the same 1979 MLB Draft, giving them two future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks in one baseball draft class.
