Meet ‘The Strawberry Queen’ she’s a 20ga smoothbore Fusil de Chasse from Pecatonica Muzzleloaders. This was a super fun kit to build and was a daunting project project for me being it is the first real builders kit (not a traditions or easier kit) that I’ve done. I took my time, learned from past mistakes, and churned out what I think has moved into my top favorite fi****ms. Next up is patterning and getting ready for small game season in September! I have a couple more projects that are wrapping up as well. Summer is turning out to be a fruitful time of year here at Hearth and Hollow. Stay tuned!

Started on another bag today. Used the last remnants of some moose hide I had on hand, added a nice big double pocket on the inside, the flap is a piece of Buffalo hide trimmed with deer skin and backed with ticking. Added attachment points for a future shoulder strap.

Whipped up a small horn cup this weekend. Found the quote on a list of 18th century toasts that I liked. Will be a nice addition to the growing “Horn utensil” collection.

Not everything to come out of Hearth and Hollow is period correct, but that’s ok! A friend of mine asked for a leather carrying case to class up his to***co. So I knocked out this small hinged case. Rustic and functional, should work out just fine.

Had a productive weekend in the shop. My turkey leg bones from my spring gobbler dried out and I was able to fashion two knives out of them as keepsakes. I also experimented with some of the wing feathers and made a couple quill pens that have a nice feel to them, still need to get used to writing with them 😅 I rounded things out with a commission project for a fellow reenactor who portrays a Pioneer solider and wanted a period style sheath made for the axe he carries. I used my homemade vinegaroon dye that is by far the best black leather dye I’ve ever used and presents a beautiful deep color when oiled up.

Finally finished up a hunting horn for myself I started MONTHS ago. This horn had a perfect sweep to it that very naturally sits on my side, so with no inspiration other than wanting a personal hunting horn, I’ve slowly carved and sanded my way to the finish line. A Earlier “style” horn with scratching a of my hunting grounds and game taken at different spots. Used a piece of cherry I had for the spout and plug and carved a stopper out of a shed antler tine. Still have to make a strap and attach it but it’s a nice deep belly horn that will hold PLENTY of powder for future hunts.

I was very fortunate to get my first turkey this weekend. Had every intention of doing it with black powder but a misfire necessitated dropping my smoothbore and grabbing my buddy’s modern shooting iron to get the job done. Could be happier at the result though! Now on to the fun part for me, PROJECTS! So many useful parts on a turkey. I plan to make a couple knives out of the leg bones as well as a euro style mount once I clean and whiten the skull. I did manage to get two wing bone calls made up today though. Crazy how realistic they sound (my wife was napping upstairs so I was trying to be quiet 😅). Everything from feathers to meat from this bird I’m grateful for and will be put to good use!

Finished up a couple weekend projects today. Keeping with the powder measure theme, I decided to make a measure for my turkey kit, used a shed end and carved a little turkey foot out of the back then poured pewter into the carving and then filed it smooth. The other smaller measure is for a friend of mine who I fixed up a 36 cap and ball revolver for and needed a powder measure. I personalized the bottom with a small arrowhead since he loves looking for rocks on his place. Then while the pewter was hot I decided to try my hand at jewelry making and poured me and the Mrs a couple of claddagh inspired rings. Everything turned out get and now I’m styled up and ready to get a turkey with my flintlock. That’s a productive Monday in my book.

Made a small shot pouch for turkey hunting. Carved a 1 ounce Turkey effigy measure for it as well. Used my homemade vinegaroon dye. I always forget just how well the vinegaroon dye works, and leaves a great finish on leather. Shot pouch holds only enough for a few shots but it’s perfect for the day bag. 🦃 💥

When the winter hours get long and cold, everyone needs a little entertainment to keep themselves occupied. A popular betting game of the 18th Century was a dice game called Hazard. While the rules are a bit complicated to get the hang of, you can bet this game was played in many a tavern and around many fires of the frontier. This set features two diced carved out of Cherry, with a rolling cup made out of 8oz cowhide with a ominous design molded into it and stitched with artificial sinew. If you want a set of your very own for your pack to occupy yourself on those weekend treks, drop me a PM.
