π§ The Value of Fresh Water: Papua New Guinea's Greatest Natural Advantage
Sometimes we take for granted what much of the world is desperately searching for.
This freshwater river is a reminder that Papua New Guinea is blessed with one of the world's most valuable natural resources: abundant clean water.
While countries such as the Dubai invest billions of dollars in desalination plants and water infrastructure to produce fresh water, Papua New Guinea is naturally endowed with thousands of rivers, streams, waterfalls, lakes, and high-rainfall catchments that flow across our land every day.
Freshwater systems provide far more than drinking water. They support agriculture, fisheries, biodiversity, forests, and entire ecosystems that sustain both people and wildlife. They create opportunities for hydroelectric power generation, helping drive the transition toward clean and renewable energy. They support tourism through breathtaking rivers, waterfalls, and natural landscapes that attract visitors from around the world.
Beyond this, clean water creates opportunities for bottled water exports, eco-tourism ventures, sustainable agriculture, aquaculture, carbon-positive forest conservation, and rural economic development.
In the 21st century, fresh water is becoming one of the world's most strategic resources. Papua New Guinea is not only rich in minerals and natural gasβit is rich in something equally important for future generations: clean, renewable, life-sustaining water.
Our challenge is not whether we have these resources. Our challenge is how wisely we protect, manage, and develop them for the benefit of our people and future generations.
Water is not just a resource. It is a strategic national asset.
