Bl. Chiara Luce Badano (1971–1990) was a modern-day Italian teen who shows that sainthood isn’t reserved for the distant past—it can look like sneakers, friendships, and a radiant smile. A member of the Focolare Movement, Chiara loved Jesus deeply and lived her faith with contagious joy, but at 17 she was diagnosed with a painful bone cancer. Instead of turning inward, she offered her suffering to God, famously saying, “For you, Jesus—if you want it, I want it too.” She refused morphine at times so she could remain clear-minded to love and pray, and even in intense pain, she kept choosing joy, thinking of others, and trusting completely in God’s plan. She died at 18, calling her death a “wedding” with Jesus. Chiara Luce reminds us that holiness isn’t about having an easy life—it’s about loving boldly, right where you are, even when it hurts.
