In my cake decorating, I've been experimenting with natural food dyes in an effort to move away from artificial and harmful ingredients. I've tried various sprinkles, powders, and liquid colors but have been generally disappointed. Most of these natural products are muted colors and pale at best. But I think this is a win! For this blue frosting, I used blue spirulina powder. It's such a vibrant blue! I was afraid it would affect the flavor, but it didn't at all! For the black fondant pieces, I mixed in some black cocoa powder! The color turned out great! I thought it made the fondant taste like a tootsie roll, but others who tried it disagree lol. One of the things that impressed me about these two products is that it did not stain my formica countertops or my hands, as artificial dyes do!! And when the kiddos were eating the blue frosting, I didn't see any blue teeth or tongues... no staining there either! I'm very happy with these results and I can't wait to try other colors!
