19th Century Japanese Black Lacquer and Mother of Pearl Jewelry Box

Against deep black lacquer, fragments of iridescent mother of pearl form an intricate Japanese scene of figures, architecture, flowering branches and landscape details. Each change in the light reveals another flash of pink, green, silver or blue within the inlay.

Dating to the 19th century, the box retains its original tufted silk lining. Age-related losses are present, yet the surviving decoration and beautifully worn surface give the piece remarkable visual depth and authenticity. No key is present.
