This sophisticated violin was made here in our shop by Ricardo Perez Montoya, who trained first at the violin-making school in Cremona, and then in Parma with the legendary Renato Scrollavezza, who was entrusted with the care of "Il Cannone," Paganini's famous Guarneri Del Gesu.
This violin, named "Arturo" by its maker, is especially notable for two characteristics: First, the sound is what most players are seeking - lush & sinuous, but also powerful with strong projection. Second, it is very comfortable to play, with a slim neck, meticulously profiled fingerboard, and intelligently shaped bridge. The violin was made on a personal model, with a clear Guarneri basis.

This lovely & rare French violin bow is the work of Nicolas Simon (1806-1864), known as "SIMON FR," as he followed the somewhat common practice of adding part of his wife's maiden name to his brand. Although Simon's highly-prized bows are not uncommon, this is one of only two known that were made in the style of and branded for Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, the most important French violinmaker & dealer of the nineteenth century, The frog edges & ferrule are rounded, and the frog rides in a rounded track on the bottom of the stick. Weight is 60 grams, and the stick is 72.7cm in length. A Raffin certificate dates the bow to c. 1855.

We have just finished setting up, for sale, a very fine cello by Theodor Berger, one of the best German luthiers of the 20th century.
Berger was born in St. Petersburg in 1897, but spent his working life in Markneukirchen. This cello, which carries Berger’s original label and brandstamp, comes with the respected certificate of the Wolf-Dieter Fischer of Munich, who dates the cello to 1925-1930.
In remarkably fine condition, it possesses a rich, powerful, expressive voice. The soft, dark varnish is completely original.
This cello would make a perfect companion for a student planning to study at a conservatory, for a professional facing auditions, or for a serious amateur. It is the equal of much higher-prices Italian or French cellos.

We have been fortunate to show, at the same time, several instruments from the respected French family firm of Collin-Mézin, whose workshop in Mirecourt endured for five generations. While the Maison Collin-Mézin originated in 1823, the best-known instruments date from the 1880s into the twentieth century. During this period, three generations of the family, all with the same name, Charles-Jean-Baptiste Collin-Mézin, headed the small firm: the father (b. 1841, d. 1923), the son (b. 1870, d. 1934), and the grandson (b. 1910, d. 1987).

At the moment, we are showing two full-size violins, dated 1897 and 1901, a 7/8 violin, date faded but probably 1880s, and a lovely and powerful 15 1/2” viola, dated 1920. And we recently sold another Collin-Mézin violin, dated 1896 and labeled for the famous London dealer Beare and Son. All are based on a Stradivarius pattern.

Here are a few photos of the viola, as well as a scanned page on Charles-Jean-Baptiste Collin-Mézin.
