Washington State is recognizing EDS and HSD Awareness Month!

The most commonly recognised symptom of hEDS is:

• hypermobility of the joints (joints that move beyond normal range)

Our joints are lax because our connective tissue is stretchy. Injuries to the soft tissues around our joints occur easily because our joints can twist or over-extend easily.

This reduced stability in the joints can lead to symptoms such as:

• dislocations and subluxations
• ligament sprains
• tendonitis
• bursitis (inflammation of fluid filled sacs that reduce friction in the joints)
• scoliosis (curvature of the spine)
• disc prolapse (slipped disk)

We are also affected by signs and symptoms that arise either as direct complications of hEDS or as comorbidities (associated disorders). These include:

• pain (acute, chronic, neuropathic, myofascial)
• skin that bruises easily and may be mildly stretchy
• extreme tiredness (fatigue)
• cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction (including increased heart rate and dizziness after changing positions (e.g. changing from sitting to standing)
• anxiety
• gastrointestinal disorders, which may include acid reflux, bloating, pain, gastroparesis (a condition that affects the spontaneous movement of the muscles in the stomach)
• problems with bladder control
• pelvic organ and re**al prolapse
• proprioceptive dysfunction (a condition affecting the body's ability to sense movement, action, and location)
• autism spectrum disorder
• developing osteoarthritis at an earlier age than is usual.
• tethered cord and Chiari malformation.
• mast cell activation syndrome and allergies
• problems during pregnancy/childbirth including increased joint instability, early rupture of the membranes, rapid labour, breech presentation).
• reduced response to local anaesthetic (e.g., topical anaesthetic, epidural injections, dental anaesthetic)

Everyone’s experience will be different and this list is far from exhaustive.

May 2nd, my type of EDS. I have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, also known as hEDS. I was diagnosed in 2020 after 13 years from the onset of my first noticable symptoms. hEDS is the only subtype without known genetic markers. There is no cure.

With May around the corner, I've partnered with the Ehlers Danlos Society and the Walk & Roll'A'Thon to help raise money for research and support. My personal goal is $500, and overall is $120,000 to $150,000 (USD).

This is a global walk, run, or roll. Connect your Strava account or check out the EDS Society (US) website for more details on how to submit your acts of awareness.
