There is something unforgettable about the work of Jim Green

In this carved wooden vessel, the wood is allowed to speak in its own language. The cracks, the openings, the grain, the weathered honesty of the piece all become part of the story. And then comes the light. That blue glow moving through the natural breaks in the form feels like something deeper than design. It feels like revelation. Like beauty finding its way through what has been opened, split, and shaped by time.

It is exactly the kind of work that belongs in Light in the Hollows. It carries the spirit of this exhibit so well. It reminds us that light does not only rest on the surface. Sometimes it comes through the broken places. Sometimes it shines strongest through what has been carved, tested, and made true.

We are proud to celebrate Jim Green of Curly Shavings Woodturning, a Southwest Virginia artist whose work reflects both craft and quiet wonder. Jim is part of the region’s artisan community through Round the Mountain: Southwest Virginia's Artisan Network, and his work is also represented through the galleries at the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center & Marketplace in Abingdon.

This piece is a beautiful reminder of what makes Southwest Virginia art so powerful. It is rooted. It is thoughtful. It is shaped by hand, heart, and place.

Reminder: the deadline is approaching for My Light, My Mountains, our children’s art pop-up exhibit at Haus of Taylor.

This special exhibit celebrates the young artists of Southwest Virginia and gives them a chance to see their work displayed in a real gallery setting alongside the spirit of our current exhibition, Light in the Hollows.

Today, we’re excited to share a painting by Emma, entered in the ages 5–8 group. Her piece, Nature’s Animals, is a beautiful reminder that creativity starts early, and sometimes the smallest hands carry the brightest light.

Dan Belanger

Painting since his early teenage years, Dan Belanger brings a thoughtful, precision-driven approach to oil painting, embracing the medium for its flexibility and capacity for continual refinement. His work is deeply inspired by rural life.

Dan’s landscapes capture quiet, pastoral moments, often featuring cows nestled naturally into the scene, while exploring color as a central expressive force.

His piece Tag 26 reflects this journey, evolving from an interest in structure and form into a rich study of color and atmosphere.

Join us next week for our first "Crafted Conversation" on Monday, May 4 from 2 - 3 p.m. at the SWVA Cultural Center in Abingdon.

Crafted Conversations are informal gatherings where artists connect, share ideas, and learn together. Bring your questions, ideas, or challenges and join a facilitator-led peer conversation. Topics may include marketing, pricing, grant writing, skill sharing, and more based on what the group needs that day. No pressure, just real conversations with fellow artists.
