About the Owner:
Jim Tinney grew up on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington in small logging towns like Forks, Clearwater, and Amanda Park. He’s always wanted to start a bookstore in a town like the ones he grew up in, for people like him who love books. Sultan was a perfect fit, and the building that needed some TLC in the center of town was the perfect place. About Kiss The Sky Books:
Kiss The Sk
y Books will be a new and used bookstore, coffee house, and entertainment venue. Michelle Tinney, Jim’s eldest daughter of three, has come to Sultan to help build and manage the business. We will provide the community with a place to enjoy any kind of books from paperback romances to science fiction, history, art, and how-to - as well as have a great cup of coffee and attend events such as poetry and book readings, music, wine and beer tasting, and much more. About the building:
The building at 401 Main Street was built in 1892 and moved to its current location by the previous owner. The second half of the building (403 Main) was added in 1896. Our concept for the building is simple - it's a great old building, and we are going to turn it back into a great old building, restoring features that have been removed or covered over with 5 or more layers since its heyday at the turn of the century. Several great artists and craftsmen are collaborating on our unique art-nouveau / northwest decor. One of the first things to do to the building was to repair the foundation - the building had quite a tilt, floors with several inches of height difference, and parts of the building were in danger of collapse. Construction came in to do the job, which took a few weeks. During this time, the City of Sultan was also doing street and sidewalk work around the building. Restoration and demolition is moving along swimmingly and we have discovered countless artifacts including a huge Mural on the side of the building, playing cards and poker chips, a $5.00 gold coin from 1892, posters, newspapers and countless other fascinating artifacts that tell us the story of the building. We are very excited to welcome you to Kiss the Sky on our opening date of July 6, 2017.
