Love takes courage. And education, respect, respecting boundaries, self examination, being truthful with yourself, listening to understand, admitting when you’re wrong, taking action, taking a back seat, offering support be it time or dollars, awareness, being vocal, standing up, speaking out, creating opportunities, questioning long held and deeply engrained beliefs, saying I’m sorry, doing the work to understand your way may not be the best way, and always committing to be better than you were the days before.

Let’s all love each other ... by doing all of the things above, for every single human being, no matter how you perceive their race or gender or sexuality. All humans deserve love.

Last night I had the honor and privilege of helping to bring eleven poets to the open ears and open hearts of the Bay Path University. I listened to poets spill their truth, some of these voices seasoned with experience, others braving the virtual stage for the first time to share their words.

Every single voice was inspiring. Almost every single piece was drenched in both hurt, and in hope. In sorrow, and in strength. In disappointment, and in determination. Each poet delivered a flurry of emotions, unique to their experience but also overwhelmingly universal.

These humans were exceptional. They are exceptional. And it reminded me that we ALL have this depth of emotion and reaction circling around in our hearts and minds, eager for an outlet. That depth can drown us if we don’t let us out.

It reminded me of how long it’s been since I’ve given myself the time and space to write or paint without expected outcome or objective. Of how long it’s been since I’ve given my feelings and overwhelm and anxiety and reactions and emotions an outlet to get out of my head and out of my heart and onto paper through pen or brush.

If you, too, are feeling your head swirling, try writing about it. Essay, prose, a list, a mess of words - pick up a pen and see what comes out without judgement or expectation. You don’t need to be a master of words to write your own.

P.S. - the words of Crystal Senter Brown: Writer, Speaker, Educator. and Lynette Johnson from last night have stuck with me. Check them out and let their powerful words bless you, too.

It’s a good day to say I love you to those you love. But then again, so is every day.

The more you love, the more love you have to give. You can love your family, your significant other, your children, your friends. You’ll never run out. So today, let it all out.

Happy Love Day! ❤️

I’m on an official campaign to bring Valentine’s Day back into the non-dreadful holiday category for 2021.

It was right around Valentine’s Day last year that our world began to change. The last twelve months have taught us who is most important to us, how swiftly and unpredictably life can change, and how critical it is to remind those you love that you love them.

Somewhere along the way we forgot that love can be platonic. We don’t need to reserve our valentine wishes for spouses or significant others. Valentine’s Day is for love. LOVE! In all of the glorious, beautiful ways it shows up in your life. And I think it’s pretty special that we have a day on the calendar to do just that.

I made this photo strips through Social Print Studio to send to loved ones this year. Who’s getting them? Our new neighbors that filled our house with love, helping to turn it into our home. Friends near and far, who we miss dearly. Grandmas and grandpas. Aunts and uncles. Heck if I could mail one to my dog, I would.

My hope is that they’ll stick it on their fridge or to their pin board, use it as a bookmark, slip it into their journal, and that it will be an everyday reminder that they are loved.

I’ve partnered up with Social Print Studio to help you send some love of your own! Use code PRINTTHERAPY to save 20% off of your order - they print photo strips, postcards, prints, and more. Shop through their app or at socialprintstudio.com.

A few months ago I ordered Social Print Studio prints for the gallery wall I had been dreaming of since moving into our new home. All of the prints evoke an emotion for me - hope, love, peace, joy - things I wanted to be reminded of every day. I wanted to be reminded that they exist, in my life, in my current, every day life. They are things to dream of and to work for, but they’re also things that already exist. They are things I need to remember that they already exist.

When Social Print Studio offered to send me one of their new photo necklaces, I knew exactly what I wanted to have printed. This image, from a AFSP walk, is a message that I needed (and need) to hear when I am at my lowest. We wrote it on a rock, and threw it in the water, in hopes that one day it would show up for someone who needs these words, too.

Now I can carry this message, held by the tiny hands of my son, literally close to my heart, every day.

What. A. Gift. ❤️

Swipe over for a closer look at the necklace. It’s a beautiful modern day take on a locket.

If you’re in need of photo prints or even a necklace of your own, Social Print Studio has graciously offered a 20% discount on your order through Feb 2. Use code PRINTTHERAPY at checkout at socialprintstudio.com.

Necklace gifted from SPS.

A lot of the decisions I’ve made over the last few years have been directly influenced by the knowledge that my son will one day see that his mother stood her ground and spoke up and out when it was the right and needed thing to do. Even when it was hard. Even when it was uncomfortable. Even when it was scary.

My morals and values will be clear to him, not only because he’ll one day read my words, but because they are ingrained in his upbringing and in his daily life.

But it’s important to me that you all know exactly where I stand, too.

In our house, in my heart, in this online space, I support Black lives, Trans lives, and love of every kind. I stand against racism, antisemitism, and fascism. I believe in democracy, science, and the greater good.

I believe that people are worth protecting. They are worth caring for - no matter where they’re from, what they look like, or how much money they have. I believe families belong together, no matter how they came to be a family or what people they’re comprised of. I believe women belong in power, at every table, and are more than the output of their reproductive organs.

Raising a white boy, who will grow up into a white man, has become one of my most critical jobs as a human being. And the only way to raise this next generation to be better than what we’re living now is to loudly and proudly instill these values into the very core of his being.

Because they sure as hell are what make up the very core of mine.

If today holds more pain than it does joy, I see you. If today is more drinking to forget than drinking to remember, I see you. If today is less merry, more scary, less wonderland, more wonder-why-this-still-hurts-so-much-land, I see you.

What is a season of joy for many is a season of pain and uncertainly for others. No matter how you feel today, no matter what your heart holds, it is valid. Your feelings are valid. You are valid.

Wishing those who celebrate a merry Christmas, wishing those in pain peace, and wishing everyone a restful Friday evening.

I have been fascinated by the Japanese art of kintsugi for a long time - the idea that highlighting brokenness can turn recovery into art might be one of the most beautiful and resonating concepts I’ve ever encountered.

It’s been a guiding force for me over the last four years. Instead of sweeping my own brokenness under the rug in hopes that no one would see it, I began piecing it all back together, gilding the chips and the cracks with the golden hue of words and imagery that brought my brokenness out into the open, and left it there for all to see, with the sole hope that someone else may find their broken edges beautiful, too.

I’ve been hanging onto this bowl for years, it’s broken pieces sitting in itself, knowing one day I would take the time to glue them back together. Like so many things, I never did. Somehow, as universe has a magical way of doing, my dad found it, glued it back together, and surprised me with the mended bowl. Like every other asset of my brokenness, someone who loved me was pivotal to the rebuilding. Someone who loved me reminded me of what was possible. Someone who loved me held the pieces together so that I could make that brokenness beautiful.

The bowl, which now holds my house blessing and house protection stones from House of Intuition, is looking beautiful today - arguably more beautiful then when she was originally whole.

Because she’s whole today, too. Beautifully whole. Cracks, chips, and all.

When you unintentionally but perfectly match the gift wrap to the card. ❤️
A friend came over for a socially distant dinner to share, digest, and celebrate some moves she had made that felt scary but ultimately were big, bold steps into her next chapter.
Tucked inside that bag? A ‘This Smells Like Burning Down the Patriarchy’ candle, as a reminder that sometimes these grand social ideas manifest in what feel like small ways in our personal little spheres, and that standing up for one woman is equally as important as standing up for a million women.
Change starts small, one decision, one person, one candle flicker at a time. That is how we grow, how we collectively energize, how we are emboldened by those around us to make our own hard choices. She for sure inspired me to make some of my own. ❤️

There’s no magic snap of the fingers, no wave of the magic wand, no hope or prayer that will undo the degradation and unjustness and straight up violence and judgement that the BIPOC community has faced for generations.

The snap of the fingers we’re looking for? It’s doing the work. The magic wand? It’s doing the work. The hopes and prayers? It’s doing the work.

This work is uncomfortable; that’s how I know I need it. I want to say “I support the BIPOC community!” and have it be enough. It isn’t enough. I want to donate money to organizations making true change, and have it be enough. It isn’t enough. I want to post about my outrage and my empathy and have it be enough. It is nowhere near enough.

I need to learn and to listen, to make change in a way that is needed and requested, and not in the way that I decide is right. I need to change my world. So that I can change my son’s world. And so that we can begin to change the world around us.

And that is going to take WORK. 37 years of unexamined privilege is a lot to go through. And what a damn privilege that is.

These last few weeks I have tucked this card into more shipping envelopes than I can count. Every time my phone dings with a new order I am grateful for the patronage but also also deeply saddened that someone has a need for this card.

My hope is that by having this card ready for you that I can carry some of the burden for you, some of the pain that comes when someone you care about loses a loved one.

Our worlds are heavy. Let’s help each other carry them.

Signed, sealed, delivered. 💌 If you’ve been wanting to send a card to one of our 18 million healthcare heroes, but haven’t had the time, or you don’t know what to say, this is for you.

Head to the shop link at www.print-therapy.com. Pick out a card in the Healthcare Heroes section (scroll through the photos on this post to see the options). Use code HEROES at checkout to take off shipping. I’ll fill out the card, cover the stamp cost, and get it in the mail for you.

Know what you want to say? Great! Stick it in the Notes section and I’ll write your message. Unsure? That’s okay! Leave it blank and I’ll write a heartfelt note for you.

Have a particular healthcare worker you’d like to send it to? Have a certain hospital or medical facility in mind? Great! Leave their info in the note at checkout. Otherwise, I’ll pick one close to your billing address and figure out the details.

18 Million Thanks is on an awesome mission to send a thank you note to every single one of our frontline healthcare worker. That number might feel overwhelming, but what if we all sent one or two? Each little thank you builds into a giant community of gratitude.

Have cards or heck even plain paper already at home? Hooray! Use what you got.

Gratitude is healing, and when it’s in the form of a written note, it’s a bit of bubble wrap for the heart for both the sender and the receiver. I hope you’ll send a card today.
