LRI has more stuff for activities!
Sturgis, SD to Butte, MT. I depart Friday at 5pm, stop at my "brother Corey's" house (castle) to mooch a trailer.
Now the fun starts. . .
He calls asking where to buy some 2-1/2", 1/4" wall DOM tube on a Friday at 6pm. He owns a door company, a colleague of his is on an emergency job up in Williston, ND for the medivac/trauma center there. A huge hangar door is being retrofitted that requires some bushings being made from scratch. Aircraft are stuck, they cant move in or out of the hangar.
I make a call and source some material in Rapid City. I'm on the WY border. I race back to the shop as his wife is "Ubering" the steel to me. She arrives shortly after I get machines fired up. It's 3-1/2" OD solid bar in 4142 steel.
Ugh, this is going to take a minute.
The OD has to be chewed off and a hole needs to get poked. These parts are over 7" long. I own a gun shop. We don't make stuff with 2" diameter holes 7" long here. I have a single 1" drill that is long enough and a boring tool with the reach. I get to work.
Fire up the mill to drill and bore. It takes longer than hoped to bore the dumb things as the chip evacuation proves a challenge on a hole that big with a part standing vertically.
As an sideshow to all of this, I forget to shut the hose off while topping off the coolant tank. "Lake Chad" (Lake Dipsh*t) forms and "we" (Corey) get to squeegee, vacuum, and mop the floor. Stupid. If there's a 50/50 chance of something screwing up, there's a 98% chance I'll find the wrong way.
Somewhere along this sh*tshow, another friend of Corey's shows up with some DOM tube. It's 2-1/2 x 1/2 wall. Much less stuff to chew off so we hit the reset button and start over.
Things are moving well now.
3:30am. Parts are finished. A plane is idling on the tarmac at the Spearfish airport 15 miles away. Corey does a hand off to the pilot and he's wheels up moments later for a 2hr flight to Williston.
I once again head to Butte, MT. I arrive in Billings around 8am as my phone buzzes at me with a text. Parts arrived, installed, and job is completed. Aircraft can once again go in/out of the hangar.
Get to Butte around 1pm, load this bu**er up in an hour or so, and start heading back south. I make it as far as Billings and decide it's time for a nap.
11hrs later I wake up and head for home as I (once again) realize I am not 25 anymore.
Good times.
A very well earned thank you to brother Corey and his wife for their trailer, telehandler, and help with all of this!
