An update on our sweet Penny!
She slept the entire way to her new home yesterday after a long and stressful day. After resting and recuperating at the wildlife rehab, we’ve gotten an update today that she is eating well and acclimating to her new environment. She will soon be ready to meet a couple of the other squirrels sharing space in the rehabilitation home, and she will probably be thrilled to be with some of her species again 💛
We look forward to seeing her progress and will share those updates with all of you as well.
We will forever be grateful to the woman who stepped up to take Penny and so many others in, expecting nothing in return. It’s a wonderful feeling when people step up to do wonderful things purely for the sake of doing what’s right even when no one is necessarily looking. That’s the mark of what’s good in this world.

Today didn’t go as planned — but what happened instead was more meaningful than anything we had scheduled.

A juvenile squirrel, no more than six weeks old, was found in the lot of what I’ve come to call The Quiet Corner — Chickadee’s Gift Shop, Vintage & Swoon, and The Northside Apothecary. She was abandoned, dehydrated, and lethargic, and when Sylvia, of Chickadee’s Gift Shop, tried to move her somewhere safer away from the traffic, she made it very clear she wasn’t going anywhere without us.

We learned a lot today. Abandoned baby squirrels will seek help from the nearest creature willing to give it. We listened for her mother all day — a call, a return — and neither came. So we slowly rehydrated her, eventually supplementing with a squirrel-safe formula as the hours without nourishment wore on.

She spent the entire day at the Apothecary and charmed every single visitor who came through. Thanks to the wonderful Mallory at Vintage & Swoon, we found her a wildlife rehabilitation home not far from the shops.

She’ll be missed more than we expected.

I’m so grateful for the incredible women around me who made it possible to care for this tiny creature — who has since been named Penny, having been called Philip all day, because honestly, who really knows what a squirrel’s anatomy looks like anyway 😅

We were all gratefully blessed today.

The Northside Apothecary will not be open today, Friday June 5 ~ We are taking a much needed personal day to recalibrate and rest!
We will be back tomorrow, Saturday June 6, doors open at 10am, with a free cup of tea for all visitors ☕️

Beautiful day in Sturbridge MA ~ and the roses are blooming! The cusp of spring going into summer is possibly my favorite window of the season, the memories of a long winter washing away with the proof of a new, more awake environment presenting itself so vividly… and so much more to come!
