“The Favourite Picture Book,” No. 1,
Victorian Pop-Up Book Made with Honeycomb Tissue
[POP-UP BOOK]. “The Favourite Picture Book,” No. 1.” No text, nor date included other than “Printed in Germany D.R.G.M. 247883” on bottom right front cover along with a bear in a circle. No publisher noted. [Germany: N.d., ca. 1906].
First edition and first in this series of 3 total. (There appears to be two others published after, one on the circus and one with animals. This one in particular deals with people). Only one set identified and only this volume to be recorded on an obscure site wishlist. Tall octavo. 12pp. (Measures approx 13 x 8”).
Original color pictorial boards depicting a young boy holding up what appears to be a very similar book. Illustrated with 6 glorious color double-page honeycomb tissue paper pop-ups, signed by various artists.
The honeycomb pop-up is achieved by raising a circular, spiral cut layer which you can see through. For example, the 4th illustration uses the honeycomb as a birdcage revealing the parrot inside it. Each page is very unique. Some examples of the use of honeycomb used here are as follows: fruit, hot air balloon, chef’s delight, Christmas tree among others. This copy complete and scarce in such nice condition considering it was published over a hundred and twenty years ago. Some rubbing to board extremities and spine, approx. 2 inches missing on bottom of spine, sunning to top of Christmas tree, rear blank board discolored. By far, this is one of the most magnificent in size and color honeycomb tissue pop-ups I have ever seen. Scarce!
The bear in the circle with “D.R.G.M. 247883” on the bottom right of the front cover indicates the marking “Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster” meaning German Imperial Model, indicating a registered design or utility model in Germany, suggesting commercial or industrial product. Or in other words, a patent.
