The Chinese Ground Orchid or Urn Orchid (Bletilla striata) is a hardy, perennial terrestrial orchid that is native to Eastern Asia and is easy to grow outdoors, unlike it’s more delicate exotic counterparts. The plant is named after Luis Blet, who was an 18th-century chemist and botanical garden operator. The ‘striata’ portion of the name, refers to the raised ridges on the foliage.
Urn orchids enjoy sandy, loamy soils and will grow to about 2 ft. heights. These flowers will tolerate partial to full sun, doing best in dappled light. The Chinese Ground Orchid will also do well indoors if given ample bright, indirect light. Place these girls in any shady or loamy areas of your yard for a wonderful, delicate color pop! Flowers may appear pink, white, or purple in color and are roughly 1” around. Bletilla striata enjoy watering when the upper inch of soil dries out, and they often bloom in Spring and Fall seasons. For optimal planting locations, look for shaded grassy slopes, foothills, or mature canopy edges, hammock forests, and property fringe-lines.
Some fun facts about Urn Orchids include that they have been cultivated for thousands of years in Asian cultures, for their medicinal benefits. This is because, the roots of the plant are antibacterial and anti-inflammatory in nature. These orchids have also been described as being utilized in the treatment of stomach and lung hemorrhages, even uterine and nose bleeds. Further, mucus from the bulb is used to enhance inks and treat silk strings on musical instruments. (Facts Courtesy of North Carolina Extension Gardener).
