A new plan can feel like promise and progress. After all, itโ€™s shiny and new.

But donโ€™t be distracted by something new until you look at what you already have.

As we wind down this season and start thinking about the next, take a look back at 2026.

Did you implement what you planned? All of it?

Did something work for a while and then stop?

What worked?

What kept falling through the cracks?

Where did you spend way too much time?

What did you tolerate because you were too busy to deal with it?

And what worked so well you absolutely want to keep it?

Weโ€™re quick to make new plans. New goals. New strategies.

But some of the best information about what to do next is right there in what already happened.

And if something is still driving you crazy and youโ€™re thinking, โ€œThere has to be a better way!โ€

I think we can make things less crazy next year.

I started my first business because I loved flowers.

Along the way, I discovered I loved business too.

I loved figuring out why something wasnโ€™t working. Finding a better way to do it. Understanding how all the pieces worked together.

Iโ€™m endlessly curious about how things work.

Businesses. People. Organizations. Even myself.

And maybe one of the bigger contradictions about me is this:

I love profitability, numbers and efficiency. And I believe business owners need to understand all of them.

But I donโ€™t believe those things define success.

You do.

Maybe your version of success is more revenue, more clients, a bigger team, more growth.

Maybe it isnโ€™t.

Iโ€™m much more interested in helping you build a business that works for the person leading it, the people who work in it and the clients it serves.

Whatever your version of success looks like.

Maybe all those contradictions are why I rarely see business as either/or.

Whatโ€™s something about you that seems like a contradiction, but really isnโ€™t?

Mental load is real. And itโ€™s probably taking up more space in your brain than necessary.

Last week, a photographer I work with wanted to use AI to help manage her email.

She was worried about missing something important or forgetting to take action. She knew she was holding too much in her head.

She was ready to dive in and build a system.

But first, I asked some questions.

What do you want this to accomplish?โ€จIs email really the whole problem?

Turns out, it wasnโ€™t.

There were other things she needed to keep track of, too.

And that changed what we needed to build.

Now she has a system that helps manage those details and frees up mental space for the things only she can do.

Sometimes the best way to solve a problem is to ask a better question first.

โ€œIโ€™m so busyโ€ is often the auto response to โ€œHowโ€™s business?โ€

But busy can be avoidance disguised as progress.

Like the hamster on its wheel, when you keep moving, you donโ€™t have to think about where youโ€™re going or whatโ€™s really going on.

The bookings.
The money.
The work you donโ€™t enjoy anymore.
The team that needs you for every decision.
The business thatโ€™s taking more than itโ€™s giving.

Eventually, you have to get off the hamster wheel and ask:

What do I want instead?

More money?
More time?
Better clients?
A business that gives more than it takes?

Thatโ€™s not some fantasy version of entrepreneurship.

Itโ€™s what I help my clients do.

Sometimes you have to slow down to speed up.

If youโ€™re ready to get off the hamster wheel, and take a good look at your business, DM me BUSY.

Your clients donโ€™t want working with you to feel like work.

And every place they have to stop, figure something out, remember something, or ask what happens next creates friction for them.

And usually, more work for you.

Take a look at your client experience from their side of the table.

Where are you making your clients work too hard?

If youโ€™re a business owner, youโ€™re not working 9-5. ๐Ÿ˜‚

But how are you working?

Hopefully youโ€™re โ€œlearning, trying new things and taking chances.โ€

And building the dream, whatever that looks like for you.

Dolly also said, โ€œDreams build convictions because you work hard to pay the price to make sure that they come true.โ€

Conviction is built through commitment, consistency and repetition.

Itโ€™s putting your focus where itโ€™s needed and where it will do the most to move you toward what you want.

When youโ€™re in the middle of running the business, it can be hard to keep your focus on what youโ€™re working toward.

Because effort and progress arenโ€™t always the same thing.

If youโ€™re working hard but arenโ€™t sure youโ€™re working on the right things, thatโ€™s exactly what we look at in a Business Review.

We step back, look at the whole business and figure out where your attention is needed now.

Because Dollyโ€™s right. Youโ€™ve got to do the work.

Letโ€™s make sure itโ€™s the right work.

Mistakes happen.

Even in businesses known for doing things exceptionally well.

Recently, I ordered a thank-you gift from a small company I love. The gift arrived, but the personalized note wasnโ€™t included.

I let the owner know.

She responded quickly, apologized and offered several ways to make it right.

I expected that.
But then she looked into what happened and updated me.

A recent system update had changed where the gift message appeared, and her team didnโ€™t realize it.

She thanked me for bringing it to her attention so they could fix it.

I didnโ€™t need another gift. I didnโ€™t need her to โ€œmake it rightโ€ for me.

Her response told me everything I needed to know.

Excellence isnโ€™t perfection.

Itโ€™s having standards.
Paying attention when something falls short.
Finding out why.
And making an adjustment so itโ€™s less likely to happen again.

Because mistakes happen.

Excellence is what you do next.

โ€œThere has to be a better way.โ€

When that thought runs on repeat, pay attention.

We like to jump straight to HOW.

How do I fix this?
How do I make it easier?
How do I make more money?
How do I get some of my time back?

But before the how comes a better question:

What do I really want instead?

Because โ€œbetterโ€ isnโ€™t the same for everyone.

And it might not be the same for you as it was five years ago.

Soโ€ฆwhatโ€™s the better you want now?

You started the business because you loved your craft.

And then discovered along the way that you also had to become a business owner.

Marketing.
Posting.
Invoicing.
Client meetings.
Contracts.
Bookkeeping.
Networking.
Follow-up.
Managing people.
Playing nice in the sandbox with other vendors.

You quickly learn that being great at your craft isnโ€™t enough.

And the more you resist the business side, the harder it becomes to keep doing the work you actually love.

All those other things are what make it possible to keep doing what you love AND get paid for it.

What surprised you most about being a business owner?
